Got my ranger back today. First thing I noticed was I need new brakes asap when I compared it to the bronco sport they gave me. Second thing was it is shifting smoother. Overall, I'm happy that something has been done, but not thrilled the CDF drum was not replaced. I've talked to three different independent mechanics now familiar with the 10r80 and they all said the CDF drum should have been replaced since it was already open.

But - its not hanging, the downshifts are done extremely fast (I've never seen it downshift when I apply throttle immediately), and the upshifts are smoother. They instructed me to drive it like I normally do and let me know the learning period was 500-1000 miles. Without the newly designed CDF drum being put in, I have a feeling that it will get worse over time, but I hope I am wrong.

I have attached the summary of the fix and the parts they ordered. They found what I assume is more metal than normal in the transmission.

I'm thoroughly convinced they're not putting quality driveline fluids in during assembly. I bought my ranger used with 20k on it. First week I owned it I changed both diffs & transfer case fluids......all three looked like grey milk, and all three magnetic drain plugs had so much metal dust on them that they weren't collecting any more metal. The viscosity was ok, it definitely didn't break down in that regard.
I'm not fully prepared to die on that hill, because it being a used vehicle I don't know what kind of a life it had during its first 20k. I expected to find metal dust, but not 'grey chocolate milk'.
I'm sorry now I didn't send any of my factory installed fluids off for an analysis. I'd make a small wager at least, that its not Motorcraft.

I just got mine back from the shop this week. Starting having hard shifts that were getting progressively worse while I waited for my appointment. The dealer tested and found the F clutches burnt, planetary container worn, and CDF hub center bushing out of place. Luckily, it came in with 53k miles, so just within factory warranty.

What's sad is that I thought having the same transmission as the F-150 was a selling point - figuring it was proven and overbuilt. I was wrong there!

Interestingly, I had the Ford Performance tune and that interfered with their repair so it had to be wiped out and I will need to reinstall.

It’s been just over a week since I got it back, I’ve probably put 350 miles on it I’d say since then, now that’s I’ve had some seat time I thought I’d do an update.

I can’t lie and say there isn’t a significant improvement - because there is, there is not a constant clunk when shifting from gears 3-7 or 5-7 like there used to be every time I turned from the street I live on to the highway/country road. I have had some rough shifts no doubt but not to the level I was having. I have had a few shifts were I was lurched forward a bit, but that is probably the worst I’ve had since the fix. It downshifts a lot better/faster now, that’s the biggest thing I’ve noticed. Now it’s nowhere near perfect, if I compare it to a transmission from Kia or Toyota or even the one in the bronco sport I got as a loaner, you can tell it’s not right. Bottom line - I’m glad as it’s better than it has been since the first 1000 miles but I have a feeling this will be a cycle. I am hoping ford does do a recall so I don’t have to buy the extended warranty.

Well, not to be Debbie downer, but this past week I noticed the clunking is back from 3-5 possibly 3-7. Very disappointed as I’ve only put around 2k miles since the repair. I really noticed it today when turning onto the highway ramp and turning onto the street from my driveway. Was hoping it was a one off but every day I’ve driven this week it happens. Not sure what I’m gonna do now, will be moving with in 40 days so I don’t have time to take it to the dealer. May end up paying it off and selling it to Carvana and getting something else once I move. I do not want to give ford more money for an extended warranty or deal with a repair that doesn’t replace the CDF drum.

You have a one year warranty on the repair. Shouldn’t matter what dealer you take it to. But I would still go through the motions of contacting the dealer that did the repair and get it documented.

Yesterday I noticed some bumping and clunking but then again its a season change so I just figured it was because its cold, I am not going to freak out just yet at only 53k miles...
this F***ING thing better not leave me on the side of the road in a snow storm

Yeah that is my biggest thing, I live in a rural area and am moving to an even more rural area, so it’s not easy to just call up AAA or a tow.

Contact the dealer and tell them your situation, be respectful and hope they do the right thing. Maybe they can rush it through since an initial repair attempt was already made.

Sorry to hear about your issue with the trans. It's sad that Ford didn't learn with the Focus trans issues.
