My wife lives and dies Honda and all her CRV's have been great with mpg and maintenance. We have a Pilot now and it's nice but the safety crap is extreme and you can't shut it off. I've looked at the Ridgeline's but if the safety b.s is the same as the Pilot then that is a no go. Maybe i need a 1960's C10 or F100 and enjoy the slow.
I've been seriously considering the same. An older truck with modern brakes and drive train. No nanny stuff, little electronics. I've still got my 2005 Ranger, and it just goes on and on.

The only problem I had with my 2005 Ranger was the crank pulley - the rubber isolator disintegrated and I had to replace the pulley - that was the 4.0l engine. Other than that, it was just routine maintenance (oil, filter changes, battery, etc). I don't think I even ever did the brakes on it.

I've had all the TSB's done, my trans has been out twice and I thought they got it correct this spring, i thought. Now at 44,000 miles it is shifting hard or slipping between 3rd and 4th. I went to the local honda dealer who had a 2023 Tacoma with 52,000 miles for sale. I drove and liked liked the Tacoma and had i tentions of trading in the Ranger and buyi g the Taco.
But when we sat down they offered me 13,000k for the truck. Now wait, Carmax offered 21,000 and KBB says its worth 23 or so on a trade in. The appraiser said "Did you notice the soft shifts from 3rd to 4th? I don't want your truck because I'd have to repair or replace the trans. I'd probably send it to the auto auction and dump it."
I'm so glad I bought the extended warranty. Please fix this POS so I can dump it!
I've had the same issue!!! I'm also so relieved I got the extended warranty.

I test drove a Tacoma when I was shopping around before I went with the Ranger. I know Toyota is all hyped up but I wasn’t really impressed with it. The one I tested (can’t remember what year it was) drove like crap. Suspension was stiffer than 2x4 lumber and the interior felt and looked kind of cheap. By the time I went around the block, I told the salesman I wasn’t interested but thanks for letting me try it out.

I’m not Toyota guy but what’s the deal with Tacoma’s? Seems like everyone and their brothers drive one. Am I missing something?? lol
You've got more than two brain cells... you're not missing anything.

I had a 2015 and a 2017 and they both were fine, i was living in Michigan then and kept 2 tubes of sand(about 150 pounds) in the bed to ride better. My only issue are the seats are flat as a board, the new ones are better. If you take care of a tacoma (maintenance on schedule) you'll easily get 350-400k miles before having to even think about opening up the engine.
The transmissions in the new Tacoma are failing as early as 8000 miles. The Tundra engines are imploding. For awhile, Toyota dealerships wouldn't take Tundras in on trade because the engines were failing so often and they didn't want to be stuck with the repair. Toyota isn't reliable anymore. They've fallen prey to the same crap all the other manufacturers have. The last good, reliable engine from them was the 22RE but people keep drinking the Kool-Aid and spreading the lies.

I used to have a 22RE!
Way back when I had an SR5 4WD. Solid truck.

Ranger is my daily driver and even with all its faults and crappy 💩 transmission, it's still a blast to drive and Tacomas just aren't... and a Ridgeline??? I can't even maintain eye contact unless it's a girl driving it ...

My 65" flat screen has been fine for well over 15 years. As have my four 42" flat screen monitors, in fact none of my flat screen monitors ever have failed! I did need to replace the florescent backlight in a used 15 year IBM Thinkpad laptop, but it is still chugging along.

I am not a Luddite.

But I do expect engineering excellence. And that can't be found in modern Ford trucks. So I go back to what works and is most cost effective.

The world is going to change dramatically in the next 10 years. Best be prepared for the turmoil during the shift to the new (and different) reality.

One last thing. I love the quality of music that my analog turntable produces. It is superior to any digital music that I have. The sounds are warmer and realistic. I wouldn't have thought it possible before I picked up that quality 50+ year old turntable and rebuilt it.

All the old LPs that I have acquired needed was a deep cleaning to sound new. Amazing technology.

I am currently refurbishing a couple of 1970's era Technics audio components, paired with 2 Cerwin Vega speakers that will rattle the windows without distortion... well not much distortion. Those puppies were made for partying, designed to be LOUD.

So, the trans is being pulled for the 3rd time? I hear you about being glad you purchased the extended warranty, but that may be where the issue lies. Obviously, the dealer is not fixing the real issue, so the warranty is not working out too well. I have the Ford ESP on mine too, but I am starting to think I may have wasted my money on it. If I had a lingering transmission problem like this, I would probably did into the emergency fund a play a reputable transmission shop to do true rebuild or a new transmission swap. I could also consider buying a new truck, but that would be a lot more expensive option.

I too liked the 22RE. I would have to say that the 4.0L v6 was pretty solid and well as the 4.7L v8. I owned two different Tacoma's with the 4.0L v6 and my only complaint with that motor was the fuel economy. I like my Ranger but there are days I wish I had kept my 2011 Tacoma.

Toyota is know for their V6 engines that have the power of a 4 cylinder and the fuel economy of a v8. There have been other reliable engines but they are dropping quick. Having to offer frame replacements due to rust, imploding engines. Their Toyota Care, which is hyped as super awesome customer service is because of their settlement on the Prius throttle problems.

It's because they have to follow a procedure. You can't just walk in and say the trans is bad and they will throw in a new one. The have to go through all the TSB's and repair steps, one at a time, with the ultimate being a new or rebuilt trans. Then you start all over again if that one has problems.
