It still skips first to third in Sport mode, right? Pretty sure mine does.

In Drive mode, it is normal to skip gears, unless under hard acceleration. It was designed to shift that way.

From the shop manual:

System Operation

The 10R80 transmission is a 10-speed, step ratio rear wheel drive transmission that is controlled by a PCM for gas engine applications or a TCM for diesel engine applications. The 10R80 has ten forward speeds, one reverse speed, four planetary gear sets, one mechanical One-Way Clutch or OWC, six friction clutches, an upper valve body, a lower valve body with eight solenoids, and PCM or TCM controlled electronics. The 10R80 utilizes six shift (A-F) solenoids that are linear force solenoids. Unlike previous shift solenoids they are mechanical in nature in that no transmission fluid passes through them. CIDAS s use a armature/pin assembly that moves a control valve in the main control valve body to control and apply hydraulic fluid pressure. Each clutch (A-F) is controlled by a corresponding shift solenoid (A-F). These solenoids are directly proportional in that zero current equals zero pressure and maximum current equals maximum pressure. If the power circuit to the transmission solenoids fails open, then all solenoids are failed electrically OFF, none of the clutch packs are able to engage and there is no fail safe operation.

Upshift Gear Sequence

At times the 10-speed transmission may skip gears when the vehicle starts from a complete stop. This is normal and desired behavior .

At part pedal when acceleration is brisk, single step upshifts would result in very frequent shift events (very short time in gear). Double step upshifts results when a longer time is spent in gear.

However, at light pedal or road load, single step upshifts will occur. The small 10-speed gear steps allow the engine speed to drop to lower values than it would in the 6-speed transmission; providing for the best fuel economy. In contrast, when the 10-speed transmission is at heavy or max pedal, the small steps keep the engine closer to the horsepower peak for best performance.

Down shift Gear Sequence

At times the 10-speed transmission may skip gears when the vehicle down shifts to a complete stop. This is normal and desired behavior .

The same skip shift strategy that is used for the upshift may be applied during down shift.

It shouldn’t… Mine starts in 1, shifts to 2, then 3. The only time it skip shifts is in normal drive mode.
When I shift to sport mode, the gear display does not appear in the dash, so I can’t confirm how it shifts between 1-3 when in sport mode. Am I missing something? I know that the shifts from 1st feels the same, whether I am in normal or sport.

The gears aren’t displayed in sport mode (which bugs the hell out of me) but I just count the shifts. Also just from doing research, sport mode forces the transmission to shift 1-10 and not skip gears. Sequential shifting they call it.

I asked the all-knowing AI. Basically, if you stomp on it at take off, it may hit second gear in any drive mode, but in normal usage it is programmed to skip second.

Short Answer
No, Sport Mode does not universally remove gear skipping in the Ford 10R80transmission. While Sport Mode changes shift logic to hold gears longer and shift at higher RPMs, the transmission will still skip gears (specifically 1st to 3rd) under light throttle acceleration, even when Sport Mode is engaged. The primary factor determining whether a skip shift occurs is throttle pedal position, not just the drive mode.

Throttle Position is the Real Key
The decisive factor for preventing the 1-3 skip shift is accelerator pedal position, not solely the drive mode.

  • Normal Mode: The transmission typically skips 2nd gear if the accelerator pedal position is below approximately 20%.
  • Sport Mode: The threshold changes slightly. On some models (like the 3.5L EcoBoost), if the pedal position is below roughly 17.5%, the transmission will still skip 2nd gear.
  • Preventing the Skip: To force the transmission to use 2nd gear in Sport Mode, you must apply enough throttle to exceed this threshold (generally above 17.5% - 20%). You do not need to accelerate aggressively; simply increasing the throttle position progressively and deliberately through 1st gear will signal the transmission to engage 2nd gear sequentially.
