So.......Add me to the list of transmission failures. I just had mine replaced.

Here are the details or lack of details from Ford.

Milage - 63k. Just 3k over the warranty.

Total Cost - $7,838.26. Ford kicked in with a 60/40 split. Ford paid $4,702.96. I paid $3,135.30.
Why not cover 100% of the cost? I don't know. Why cover any portion of the cost if not covering 100%? I don't know. My guess is that this is Ford acknowledging that there is a problem with the 1080R but not wanting to take full responsibility. Either way I am happy that they chipped in a considerable amount and that I did not have to take on the full financial burden.

Time frame for replacement - Almost 10 WEEKS!!!!!
On April 11th I took my Ranger in to Colley Ford in San Dimas, CA for a diagnostic. I finally picked up my Ranger on June 16th. I cannot understand all the reasons as to why it took so long. 2.5 months is a long time to be without a truck that you're still paying for. On top of that, my registration was due in May. The service tech did communicate via text and voice so that was comforting. Most of the time I had no idea what the status with my truck was.

Warranty - 3 years and unlimited miles. Lame. Does Ford really have so little confidence in this transmission?

Symptoms before replacement - Surging, bucking, and slipping. I tried fixing by replacing that sensor that is recommended on the other threads. It did nothing for me.

Diagnostic - The scope was changed a few different times by Ford. They wanted the dealers initial assessment, then they wanted what essentially consisted of a complete tear down of the transmission but in different phases. They couldn't have just asked for a complete tear down up front to save us all time. Instead they needed various tests run with screenshots and estimates. The approval process is what took the longest.

My Take - Hopefully this helps someone on here understand what to expect if they are out of warranty and experience a transmission failure. I bought mine used with 6k miles on it. I highly suggest the extended warranty for these vehicles. At this point I am reluctant to buy another Ford. I realize that all manufactures have their issues but transmission problems are a big one. I would love a full size truck in the future but I am not all that confident in sticking with Ford.

How in the world did you get Ford to cover part of the cost when you were out of warranty???!!! Wish I had that luck...

Depends on who you talk to and how you talk to them. I managed to get Honda to cover over half of a trans replacement back in the 2000's when my 2003 chewed through its first trans about 4000 miles outside of the extended warranty.

Crap shoot at best though.

I see a few more of these stories and I maybe looking at 2024 Nissan Frontiers and Toyota Tacomas. This is disheartening. Don’t wNt to get stranded in middle of nowhere. On my last trip I was an hour and a half to the nearest town and about 40 minutes drive to a cell signal.

Glad I sprung for the Ford extended warranty just after I bought the truck in February.

I'll definitely be adding an extended warranty to MP2. I (for now) plan on keeping it a while so it's peace of mind for me to have it like I did on MP1.

That extended warranty doesn’t get you home from the middle of nowhere. I’m 12 months out from getting rid of this truck so I’m going to be watching many brands. May even be able to be sold on a car with the right specs, if I could see myself putting it in and running to the grocery store, Lowe’s or Walmart I’d go for a stingray

Ford should be covering the cost on these transmissions. Legally they are not obligated, but 60K on a "no touch/no service required transmission" for its useful life is simply ridiculous!

This is just sad, that any vehicle (make, model, brand) would require replacement at just over 50k mi.
Had an 04 Explorer, 62K miles and the trans was going out. Took it to the local dealer, wouldn't cover any of it, so I drove it back home. Got home, called Ford, they told me the dealer had entered into the computer that I "abused" it, by driving it home, and they wouldn't do anything for me. So, I got on the inter-webs, found a replacement trans from a 2004 Mountaineer with 35K miles, had it delivered and swapped it out in about 6-7 hours in the base Auto Hobby Shop. The lift made it pretty easy and the fact that one of my troops was helping and his wife was an ASE certified mechanic was a big help too.

There seems to be issues with these 10 speed autos. In Australia there was a recall on brand new trucks with front pump failure, some transmissions literally failing just after driving off the dealer lot or within a couple of months. Many people report rough shifts, slipping or missed shifts as well. Perhaps Ford should have just licenced the ZF 8 speed like they did with the ZF 6 speed for the 6R80 box. instead of trying to design a new one. Does the GM version have the same issues?

If my trans goes I will just sell the truck and go back to older used trucks. In the meantime I'll bump up the maintenance (maybe do the vacuum trans fluid change and/or buy the PPE pan) and see how it goes. I have the Livernois Performance tune which I've heard actually helps the transmission life because the hard shifting = no clutch slipping.

There are a couple local ads selling Ram 3500s with the diesel and 6 speed transmission for $15-18K. One has a flat bed. Giggity.

On top of that my insurance keeps trying to double my rates. Just read a WSJ article that it's getting so bad that in some states regulators are stepping in. Owning a used beater is looking better and better.
