Somewhat related- Ford question. The guy that does my lights on my truck has an abandoned Mustang in his yard. He was supposed to buy it from a friend never technically did. He has keys and no title, he hadn't heard from his friend for sometime. Anyone know the quickest way to get a title. Looking at bonded title or thinking hom saying he lost title and re-new or bill of sale..input...

That probably varies from state to state , here in WV you can get a salvage title I believe , check with DMV and run VIN ...

AZ had digital titles only now. IIRC it can take up to 30 days to receive one.

That car still belongs gs to someone, somewhere. That your friend never completed the purchase but still has the car at his place doesn't necessarily mean the car is abandoned, I wouldn't think. "...for some time..." isn't really a clear indicator of a state of abandonment really...3 weeks or 3 yrs? That may make a huge difference.
Running the Vin at the DMV to find the owner might be a good way to go about this so you can make him a legit offer and get a good clear title.
That way you know it's all above board and no questions asked of you somewhere down the line.

He can't say that he lost the title if it was never transferred to your friend. Here in LA, you can file a mechanics lien to get the title, but it's a lengthy process with legal loopholes that have to be strictly followed. Like finding who owns the title, then serving legal notices with the owner and courts.

His friend hasn't returned his calls or texts. It been at least 2 years sitting. Bonded title can clear it.
Two years? Not much of a friend, then.
I hope getting the title is easy in this case.
Best of luck!

As others have said varies from state to state
In TX there was a process (check NC DMV site) - you filed ppr work and had to make "a documented effort" to locate the last title holder of record. was easy in TX and was not a salvage title.
But does depend on condition - the more road worthy the car is the harder it is to obtain the title.
Take pictures and find out who you can talk to at the DMV - main office

Good Luck

How old is the car and what’s the condition? Lots of abandoned cars are stolen, so I would want to make sure to do it by the book.

Each state will be different on this. Check with your state DMV.

Here is how it works with abandoned vehicles in Missouri.
You have to file all the proper paperwork and then send 1 or 2 certified letters to the last person who's name is on the title. IF they do not respond to certified letters, then the State of Missouri can and will issue a title in your name. The official paperwork also checks to see if the vehicle was ever reported stolen.

I have gotten titles to vehicles, boats and outboard motors this way. It was pretty easy other than the wait to see if anyone responds to the certified letters.

I know of an automotive repair shop next door in Belmont whose property is overflowing with abandoned vehicles due to unpaid repair bills. Looking for the City of Belmont to step in at some point as the property has truly become a hazard to nearby property owners, not to mention the nearby Catawba River.....most of the vehicles look to be 'parts cars' at best....

States often call this a "quiet title action". Here in Kansas a court can order the DMV to issue a title in your name if the due diligence has been put it in to attempt to contact any potential previous or current owners. Similar to what others have stated here. You often need an attorney for this, at least in Kansas.
