Hey all,

Gonna be driving up to Big Bear Mountain in California and the forecast says a good amount of snow.
This will be my first time driving in snow/ice (I’m a Florida native) and I’m a tad bit worried.

Any recs on tire chains/cables?

My co-worker recommended the ones in the picture.

Thanks!

I bought these for my Ranger (2021 Lariat FX4 with Fox 2.5 suspension) that has 285/65/18 KO2 tires. Did not need to use them, but tried them one time on an icy offroad hilly trail. They really bit into the hardened packed/ice mix used them on the rear tires . I have about 500 to 600 lbs extra weight in and on the back of the truck.

You can go with chains or cables if you want. Another good option is Auto Socks. They work well in Winter Conditions.

I would also recommend a good set of All-Seasons like the Michelin LTX M&S or the Firestone Destination LE3.
Auto Sox’s are good, used them on a Subaru Forester that would not go up a slick ice driveway. Put socks on rear wheels and problem solved.

Not the correct size butt he same product.

Not sure if California will accept them or not have heard different responses.

It is still a traction device, so chances are it will be fine.

Should be, but up to Officer asking the question. I think they are better and safer than chains or cables. There are some good head to head comparisons online.

According to Auto Sock, it is allowed across the US anywhere with Chain Laws. I also agree on how they are better and safer than Chains and Cables. Still pricey, but also much lighter and easier to store as needed

Bah on socks, that's for cozying up to a fire.

Real men use chains! =p

(and pinch their fingers in said chains and cuss trying to connect them) =D

Oh yeah, have some bed weight. If you're manly, a couple of 80 pound sand tubes will help, or real men *roll eyes* with crappy shoulders use Shurtrax. =D

Only a thought, but I believe I have more than enough weight in here.

Z chains by SCC. They will probably lift restrictions around noon but still need to carry chains. If you’re heading up the backside via highway 38 then Green Spot (great jerky there too) sells chains. Chain installers charge 150 bucks to install YOUR chains.. make sure you know how to install. I have 4 wd and never had to install going there hundreds of times..

I wish you well, I avoid weekends because of traffic and amateur people.. go way early or on a weekday.. new snow of the season attracts literally thousands of people, just saying.. can you say gridlock?
i ain’t joking..
