The day after my first oil change (at the dealer I bought it from), I noticed 3 fender liner rivets missing from my front drivers side wheel well. I called the service advisor immediately and was told "we don't remove those". I told her "Yes, you do, ask a tech". After a few minutes on hold she came back and said the guy swore he put them back in, but they're on his work bench, so come back and we'll put them back in.

I drove 25 miles to the dealership and asked for someone who "knows what they're doing" to go over my truck and make sure nothing was going to fall off. They ended up putting the wrong style of fender rivets in (originals were philips head, replacements were just push in) that I will be swapping out at my next oil change....which will definitely not be at their dealership.

You are right!! I am not a happy camper! I dropped my beloved Orange Ranger at the dealership and kinda floating around in the service bay close to outside watching guy doing my truck a simple oil change service. He drained the oil downward. It hits the black bracket and oil is all over that bracket. I recalled reading someone elaborated how to change oil and that you are to loose the black bracket two nuts in the front and remove two nuts off the back of the bracket. Then take it off as the front bracket is designed with a fork slide backward. He did not do that. What a sloppy job!! Next time I will do the oil change myself.

Well, with all the talk of poor service at some dealerships, I want to praise the dealership that has taken over the care of my Ranger. After the poor experience we had with the Ford dealership where we purchased our Ranger, our local Lincoln Mazda dealership has been a breath of fresh air. Excellent, quality, timely, personal service. :sun:

So Ive been working at dealerships pretty much all my life, since I turned 18, im 39 now. I now manage a Ford shop here in Las Vegas/Henderson and can gladly say, our shop runs a tight ship! Unfortunately, not all dealers are the same. Techs come in different shape and sizes and some are more trained then others. Dealers are responsible for their techs getting proper training and the pay for Ford schooling to do so. But not all do it. But once a mistake is made, you should take it back to them to make it right. We arent perfect by no means, but if and when we do make a mistake, we have the ability to make it right for our customers. All we ask is common courtesy or politeness and we will correct it. I understand the customer loses time in bringing it back and it should of been fixed/repaired right the first time, but mistakes happen. Just like going to McDonalds and saying no mustard and they still put it on by accident, it happens. But ultimately giving the dealership the opportunity to correct the concern is always best. A good relationship if you will, goes a long way.
In regards to Ford not having full synthetic oil, thats a lie, Motorcraft makes Full Synthetic oil in 5w20, 5w30, and 5w50 for gas engines and full synthetic for diesel too. I forgot what page of this conversation it was mentioned.

Thank you for sharing. I will take time to talk with service person and make sure s/he knows what to do. It is harder since I am Deaf. Have to write down my experience and ask them to read and acknowledging it. I will give this dealership a try one more time. If not, I can always take it to a different dealership. I like to use up my Ford Pass points for these services.

Part of the reason I bought a Ford Ranger is that I have a dealer very close to me. I got my oil changed there and the level was too high. I brought it back and they redid the oil change. Found it very disturbing that they can’t do sn oil change correctly. They said it was 0.3 quarts over. I find it very difficult to get an accurate level reading on the dip stick; there is considerable oil on the full length of the stick. As far as the oil change, I wonder if the oil drains very slowly from the engine ?

A good rule of thumb is to let the engine sit for atleast 15 mins. Let the oil drain back to the crankcase/pan and then take a reading with the dipstick.

I bought my Escort ZX2 at Friendly Ford and my Escape at Gaudin when they were down on East Charleston. I always had great service at both.
A friend of mine was a tech at the dealer up on Ann Rd. (can't remember the name) and he always hooked me up with deals on parts for the Escape.

I figured I'd add my 2 cents.
I just changed the oil in my dad's 2011 f150 5.0. He bought it used and we know the old owners, the truck currently has 41,000 on it. The previous owner always took it to the dealer for the oil change. Well we changed the oil in it for the first time since we have owned it today. First off I noticed the drain plug was slightly stripped, next I drained the oil out and wound out draining only 5 quarts when the truck calls for 7.7. Next I went to take the oil filter off and it came off with my fingers, it wasn't even hand tight, thankfully it hasn't been leaking. Finally, I checked the oil after I put the new in and found that the dipstick wasn't fully inserted. I know we should have been checking the oil along the way, but it's sad how the dealership has some dummie doing oil changes and not paying any attention to what they are doing. Needless to say, I checked my ranger and everything seemed to be ok.

My wife's Toyota came with two-years of free services and the first three were fine but the last one during the height of Covid was not. One day after the service woke up to oil drips (left the oil rings off the filter housing and over tightened). So from there on I do the oil changes as I have with the Ranger since new.
I believe the quality of staff has deteriorated during Covid, many probably took the free money verses working for a living (can't blame them).
Edit: Forgot to mention after the poor service on the Toyota I read the reviews for this dealership service and they went straight down hill in that last years. Also the reviews for all the local Ford dealership service dept's also went straight to heck..

Going on 74 and still do my own maintenance. I’m a licensed FAA mechanic and still enjoy the work plus I feel my standards are higher than a typical dealership staff. The few times I have went in for a warranty item, I had the part number and manual illustration to give the to service advisor. Early in my career I was a bush pilot in Alaska. Nobody worked on my aircraft but me !

Damn, I'm sitting here reading all this, and am actually glad that I:
  1. Do a lot of my own maintenance
  2. Took my truck to the Ford dealer down the street, had my leaking washer fluid bottle fixed, and while they failed to recreate my Slip Yoke concern, they still took a look and said to bring it back if happens again
This all flat out sucks. This is one of those cases where I recommend becoming friends with your service writer if possible. Get in good, toss the guy a cup of coffee or a Chipotle gift card every once in a while, be a genuine nice person, and they will bend over backwards and fold themselves into a pretzel to make you happy.

Gotta agree here.

Having contacts helps a ton.

Grace under pressure helps a ton as well. When I had my Audi, I watched my friend take some serious heat. Grace under pressure and maintaining composure definitely helps, especially if they know you won't rip their head off if someone slips up
