I have 10,700 miles on my truck and it still does the same thing. I've not had it to zero but I go off the guage rather than the miles left. There is a video on YouTube of a guy in a newer F-150 and he shows how many miles he went past zero.
You are in for a headache if you dont have the little plastic piece that keeps it in place while putting the synchronizer in the block. I attempted this on my 2000 4.0. This video is helpful.
I noticed this awhile back so I decided to take the spare off and put it beside the other and it is very close. On my truck the regular tire is 255/65R17 and the spare is 255/70R16.
I unplugged the connector, I took the plate off on the bedside of tailgate and it's right there to the right of the handle. I used electical tape and taped off the plugs.
