Wow! I don't want to criticize that at all, and I hope saying it looks like overkill doesn't. But if putting yourself in remote situations requires a solid spare, then that will certainly help.Well I went above and beyond with mine. I added soft and hard covers, valve extensions and winterized the hell out of it with tire dressing and amsoil HDMP. The steel wheel was showing some corrosion and in hindsight I should have taken better care of it over the past 4 years. I am also gearing up for a long work commute in this truck for the next few years.
However, this hard cover while very rigid and well built, and what seemed like a great idea protection-wise, must mount onto the (more recessed) back of the tire. Therefore when the wheel is fully re installed, it lengthens the hoist chain and becomes the main point of contact and support for the whole wheel.
When it’s cranked back up good and tight, it’s all a good tight fit and snug but just seems to have too much vibration (when I kick or hit it). So on the highway I can only imagine how much that will add up over time.
While I’m not worried about my new set up failing, I am worried about the toll excessive movement/ vibration will take on the hoist mechanism, and which the wheel when mounted in stock fashion, did not seem to have.
I may wind up just throwing the spare in the bed for the best protection, and taking it in/out if when I need to.
