There seems to be more choice with 17" in both wheels and tires. Anything stopping me from doing this eg would it mess with any factory settings etc?

No big issues with the wheel size change, but potential for issues with tire size change. I changed the other way from 17” to 18”, both with factory tires. In this case my speedometer may end up being off by 1 or 2 mph, but nothing substantive.

Tire size change is a whole different deal and there are many threads discussing that.

as long as the outer diameter of the entire wheel/tire package is the same you will not have issues.

IE my truck came stock with a 255/65/17 which has an outer diameter of 30.1". A 255/65/18 is 31.1"...

If you mess around on this website, you can quickly determine what that is based on what size tire you wanna switch to, or wheel: https://tiresize.com/wheel-offset-calculator/

I got a set of the 17" STX from a friend ... I love the look, but, find the Bridgestone Tires like to follow the grooves on concrete highway. Not a biggie, but, a Tad unnerving at first.

Aside from that, the ride is better due to more sidewall. The speedometer is still dead on, according to Colorado State Patrol. The wheels I got had TPMS sensors in them, so I can change back and forth and the truck just seems to "know" what tire's or at least tire pressure is.

Personally, I like the STX wheels better than the 18" Lariat rims.

i went from 265 65 18s to 285 70 17s (on new wheels) and my speedo was off by 5 mph, i used forscan and my garmin gps to get it within a 1/4 a mph, started with the appropriate size and tweaked it up and down until it was right on.

I swaped out my 18" Machined Wheels for 17" Magntics, all stock. The overall tire dia is 1mm bigger on the 17" setup vs the 18".

17" wheels will give a bit more room for tire cush over bumps. Frankly I wish my Ranger came w/ 15" Wheels, instead of 17's

If the diameter of the tire is the same, it shouldnt matter. It is better for ride quality (especially on rough surfaces) to have the bigger side wall.
