I bought a used ‘21 Ranger Lariat, has the door keypad installed (and on the window sticker). Didn’t come with the printed factory code card, so I’m trying to find an alternative way of using the keypad. I’ve tried very carefully following a few YouTube videos about how to use both keyless-entry fobs and some ignition cycling to trigger it to display the code on the driver’s screen.

Despite my best efforts I have never gotten it to show the code. I’ve also yet to find a video or post explicitly confirming this has been done on a Ranger (most videos are F150’s). Has anyone else ever had that procedure work in their Ranger?

One video for another Ford model said the code was printed on a sticker on a module near a fuse box behind some passenger side trim. Is there any equivalent for the Ranger?

Probably the easiest thing to do is have dealer pull the factory code from the Vin#
It should have been reset to factory code before being sold, but IDK.
As of this point you don't know if it is Factory or Previous Owner Code programmed.

The Ranger uses a RTM (Radio Transceiver Module) it is mounted under the headliner, above the driver's seat. (The video you watched on youtube is for the F-150) same module just different location. I pretty sure but not certain that placard you are looking for is there.

Sorry, but the service manuals do not cover the keypad, that I can find anyways, so I am sure it would be much easier to just let the dealer reset it for you.

I'm in the same boat. I have a 21 Ranger XLT that was purchased used from a dealer. It didn't have the keypad code with it. I've done all the YouTube tricks with no success. I've been to the Ford dealer and they say it's an aftermarket install and can't retrieve the code. I've also been through the Forscan modules with no success. My last hope is to find the original owner. I've looked for the code in the cab with no luck. I'm not going to start pulling the trim apart unless I know exactly where the module is located. I can still lock the doors with the keypad by pressing 7/8 and 9/0 simultaneously. Good luck!

OP, have you gone back to the dealer to see if they can help? Worse case scenario, if the keypad is really important to you is buy a new one and have the selling dealer install it (they might cut you a break on the cost).

Is it possible the code is attached to the backside of the keypad?

@tm1506, asked the dealer first and so far they haven’t been able to retrieve it for me. That’s why I was hoping there would be a backup method I could use.

Anyone with a working keypad, I’d be really interested in whether the two key procedure works in your Ranger to display the factory code on the gauge cluster screen. If it doesn’t then maybe Rangers don’t support that method, if it does then maybe something never got setup correctly on my vehicle.

I have a working one! I’m not familiar with being able to display the code, how is that done!

Apologies, I intended to include a link but forgot.

Video of procedure for keyless fobs

Ranger-specific key location
I checked out the video and I don't think that will work with the Ranger since the keypad is essentially an add on after the truck is built. The F150's keypad is built into the door and probably matched to the module in the truck when installed on the assembly line. What I'm saying is my best guess is our keypad is a random addition put on either when mud flaps, bed liner etc. are added after the truck is already built or added on at the dealer like mine was. As far as I know it acts like another remote and is programed to the receiver on the truck much like you would do with a remote for a garage door opener. BTW- mine is an XLT so I wasn't able to try out the push button start method.

Really appreciate the info, all. Hopefully that helps me fast-forward the discussion with dealership past the usual methods and see what other solutions they can offer. I’ll update here if/when I learn something new.

If the code was on the back of the keypad (maybe the dealer or Benny from @LevittownFordParts.com could confirm) you could pull it off for access (it's stuck on with double sided tape) then stick it back on with some new tape. Just a thought.

If the keypad is essentially an add-on, I would request that the dealer buy you another keypad and install it for you. I've added a keypad to some previous F150s I have owned, they keypad looks similar and it was less than $100 back then.

Here is some PDF info on the Keypad I found.

All references to IDS and FDRS are dealer level scan tools.
Now I am not sure if Forscan has Key programming capabilities or not.
My Autel Scanner does, but still unsure if it capable of fixing the issue of a keypad.

Just curious of you see anything in the (IPC) left screen relating to the keypad. You should see how many keys are programmed to the truck. (Normally 2)
I cannot recall without going to the truck, but it is listed somewhere around the My Key screen.

Doesn't work on my 21 Ranger

Over the years, I have always been able to program the key fobs and key pads, even though everything I had read said that the dealer or locksmith had to do it.

That said, I was able to program extra fobs for my 2022. BUT......for the first time ever, I had to give in and have the dealer program the add-on keypad. Cost me $45 bucks, and they had to use their laptop to do it.
