They get the speed limits thru GPS location. Waze and Google Maps already show the posted speed limit on the map. It goes red if you exceed the limit.

So it would only work with an Internet connection, or an internal navigation app?
Mandatory? More subscription fees? Who pays if you don't want the navigation stuff? Sounds like an invitation to the safety nazis to mandate a Google / Waze subscription and a smartphone just to drive your car. (or worse...)

I have no issues if it's an opt-in system, and doesn't add cost, burden or risk to those who don't want it.

Well, it would be built into the native GPS/Navi in the vehicle. You wouldn't need Google or Waze. I just use those because I don't have Navi on my STX. Your truck already has the hardware/software to know where it is, whether you pay for the service or not, evidenced by the location info in Ford Pass App.

Yes but we are missing the Yin to this Yang.
There is no pancake so flat that it only has one side.

What about the lives that are saved due to speeding? Sounds odd to even mutter off my lips but I can't even count the number of times I've sped up and passed a driver that was losing a tire, losing a load, driving drunk, driving angry, having some sort of car malfunction, or driving BELOW posted speeds n the left lane causing a back up. How many times has speed saved me from being boxed in by 18 wheelers?

Not talking about habitual speeding, just an intermittent burst to get around and clear an obstacle. Will the government be paying for damages to vehicles struck by tire debris now? What if I jack on my brakes (my only choice now) to avoid that tire being slung off a truck? What about the 5 car pile up that happens behind me?

Explain to me how Germany operates an Autobahn with incredibly high speeds and afar less number of accidents than we see else where?

What about speed limits? We established current speed limits based on vehicle and tire technology in the 1970's. If you are going to limit us to the posted limit, how about revisiting the posted limits. Cars stop and swerve faster and maintain control much better than the 1974 Crown Victoria Test Vehicles they used.

How about we start enforcing some of the laws that already exist to keep us safe? I still see people talking on their cell while driving. I still see people driving in the let lane (left lane camping). I still see people tailgating. How many times have you seen people make a right turn but go all the way over into the left lane when they do it?

Point is, we should never remove free will unless it is a last resort. There are plenty of other areas to make improvements in safety than auto reducing speed and removing options from drivers - options that save lives too.
The proposal allows 15 seconds of override.... Time to install NOS !

I just realized that tinfoil hats might actually sell better than dampers on here! I've applied for a sponsorship of the forum and I'm spinning up a website now! Bet I could color match them to Ford colors too...

On the one hand I really don't care for the government overreach and nanny state. Just like seat belts. Yes they save lives but mandating was just a way to generate ticket revenue. But I would actually favor this if it were implemented correctly. Far too many people on the road with very little common sense and consideration for other peoples lives on the road.
I might be one of those people but you are not one of those people?

if this was really about safety or saving lives the items being addressed should be things like the rolling movie theater "infotainment" systems in cars that let folks do every damn thing except drive the car and pay attention to the road and traffic.
I JUST saw a commercial for a new Mercedes and thought the exact same thing. This is the dash:

Dynamic speed limiter. Wonder where they would propose to get the speed limit signals from? Machine vision Cameras reading actual road signs?
Our Explorer already does this with "intelligent cruise control" - it actually reads the speed limit signs and adjusts your cruise control to your chosen speed limit offset.

Better than depending on Google to keep you from getting a speeding ticket...
A little scary, though. Smart enough to read signs.
Does it call the popo if you set it too high? ?

Ha ha ha! Nope. My wife drives it most of the time and she keeps the offset at +5 MPH. So she's not going to get any tickets going 70 in a 65 - which is pretty much her whole path to work.

why bother with the call. the system knows your vin and all the other data already. upload the info to the net for fuzz and they could just email the citations.
