Okay, so hoping this is a stupid question and nothing to be concerned about, but noticed a bit of rust on the drive shaft flange while I was installing my running boards. Looks to be just surface rust due to untreated steel and doesn't seem to affect the yoke (although there is some at the bolts), but still just surprised to see this much with less than 1k miles. Is this pretty typical or is this something that can create issues long term that needs to be addressed?

I can't say about the fords, but on my old truck that I drove on the beach this amount of rust is minimal. Don't know the long term impact, but that amount wouldn't concern me. Seems normal.

Figured it was just superficial surface rust but didn't hurt to ask. Just have never had any any visible rust on any of my previous vehicles (aside from restortation project car, which is why I was concerned here, cause that was an endless issue), but then all my cars had much less exposed from the bottom too.

Just went and checked on my ‘19 and same, painted black as well. Although it does look a little dirty with some surface rust spots on it right now.

Yeah, that's kinda what I'd have expected to see. Might still just contact the dealer and see what they say though pretty sure they'll shrug it off as a non-issue.

Hi Ryan,

In a way this is a good thing. When two surfaces with paint on them are bolted together and the paint fails, which it likely will do, then you loose the bolt clamp pressure and bolt loosening can be problematic. Do not worry about this. Don't waste your time taking it to the dealer.

I think the locker is internal on FX4 (and I assume Tremor)...that appears to be a different kind of U-joint...

Maybe a 2WD vs 4WD thing.

Our FX4 has the locking rear.

Mine's a FX4 and the U-joint doesn't look like the Tremor...
