I did a quick but maybe incomplete search on this topic, if this has been asked before please point me in the right direction.

While driving, the transmission likes to upshift until the motor is running at ~1,500 RPM. Whether at highway speeds or residential driving, this is what it does.

I have never operated a vehicle at this low of an RPM. In fact, this might lug the engine. Recently I was checking fuel economy and with the needle set at 59MPH, at 1,500RPM, on cruise, on flat terrain, the computer said 34 MPG. This is great but, I feel 1,500 RPM is too low.

At 1,500 RPM the engine is hardly making any power. This plus the weight of the truck is a problem for me. Tow mode or sport setting fixes this

Does the forum have an opinion on this, running at 1,500 RPM?
Were your previous vehicles all high-revving Japanese cars, by any chance? No torque at all until 4000 RPMs, because that's how they were designed?

Why would you worry about what the engine is turning when you're driving down the highway?

Just for the record... This is the reason Ford engineers designed the 10 speed automatic. If you want the RPM to be higher, step on the gas!
Not to mention this tranny was co-developed with GM. That's 2 sets of engineers at least on the transmission side. I would venture to guess that the Ram with an 8 speed and GMs with the 9 speed are similarly low in RPMs at the same speed.

I don't think you're going to find a smoking gun here. More gears = more opportunity to fit the vehicles current need, be it power or efficiency. The engine isn't 'lugging', it's being as efficient as possible given the throttle input and current need.

Also feel like this entire thread is a trolling attempt and was hesitant to reply...

"The engine must be lugging because it's running 1500 rpm" is the same advanced thinking used by the "The engine can't possibly be powerful enough because it's only a 4 cylinder" folks. Both arguments are based on prior assumptions that are stubbornly held onto even in the face of compelling evidence against the conclusion.

American engineers and corporations do not have the work ethic of the Japanese. For sure I am specifically talking about Honda and Toyota but, how many Ranger frames do you think Ford wound have replaced had it been in Toyota’s position regarding frame rot? My guess- 0.

Nissan has the same frame rot problem and they never replaced the frames... they are also a Japanese company www.nissan.com I'm never buying another Japanese or German car ever again. they are over engineered over priced junk boxes. Korean, American or Swedish are my final choices

Because he’s a troll. ??‍♂
I think you hit the nail on the head. My guess he's a Toyota fan boy who loves his powerless over-revving, tranny lugging Tacoma. :puke:

Why did OP buy an American truck if he hates American engineers so much lol
Hi Doug,

Germany and a Mustang...Maybe he can take a picture of his truck? Likely not the USA version anyway but I really doubt this "truck" exists....Hope OP proves me wrong...

Hi Phil,

Me too! But like anything these days you can find whatever you want online. I could search and post a picture of a ranger from anywhere in the world. Now if the OP wants to really prove himself take a picture standing next to your Ranger and I will publicly apologize for doubting him. One reason I'm being so skeptical is this was his first post and hasn't posted anywhere else on the board but here.

He asked "Does the forum have an opinion on this, running at 1,500 RPM?" and we all gave him our opinions and some who are actual engineers gave theirs and he still wants to argue the facts. After driving a '16 Tacoma for 3 1/2 years I think I know a lugging tranny and the Ranger does not have one.

Not much in the way of any real information on the truck from the OP. Just a bunch of arguing about “life experience” with the apparently indefectible Japanese auto makers. If anyone had that much hate for American automakers I find it very troll like to insist they bought one just to hate on it.

Now for future readers that might actually want to run a different gear...

If you don’t like what gear your 2019+ Ranger uses at your current speed all you have to do is press the negative (-) toggle button on the gear selector to reduce which gears will be available to the truck.

Example:
Truck cruise control is set to 55 mph and said truck is using 10th gear at this speed. Press the negative (-) toggle button located on the side of the gear selector. One press reduced the gear count by one gear. Now the truck will be in 9th gear and you will note the engines rpm has risen incrementally.

Continue to press the button to reduce gears available to the engine until the lowest allowed gear begins to flash on the instrument cluster. This flashing indicates you have requested a gear that would raise engine rpm past the rev limiter. Reduce your speed to select a lower gear.

You have now successfully increased your engine rpm while maintaining the same set speed. :like:

Get outta here with your logical solutions! We're only here so that we can argue about pointless things!

Oh you’re right.. We could argue about what to classify the color Saber as. Some call it orange... I think it’s closer to a sunburst metallic akin to the great “red” spot found on Jupiter. Both the use of red and orange are open for argument.

Honda cars I agree 100% they would be my first choice. After coming from a 2016 Tacoma which was nothing but a headache I would rather walk than drive another Toyota product. Their customer service was the worst and that's Toyota corporate. I have MUCH more confidence in my Ranger than my Tacoma, there's really no comparison! Now to be fair I'm talking about the 3rd general Tacomas which are pure trash. The happiest day was the day I traded mine in and have ZERO regrets buying my Ranger. YMMV
Same here I dumped my 2016 Tacoma..Too many "they all do that" excuses...
