Just an update.

Bought my truck in May, I now have 18,000 miles on it. I have never reset my fuel economy guage.

During the spring and summer and fall I was averaging right around 23 mpg. Through winter, with having to use 4 high sometimes when there is a lot of snow, and a bit more city driving, my average has dropped to 22 mpg.

70% of my driving is for my commute to work, 55 miles one way. Starts at 6,000 feet elevation, up to 7,300, back down to about 6,000 back up to about 6,800 and down to about 5,500 - all in one direction. Reverse that for the way home. This is on the freeway, normally the speed limit is 75 and I set my adaptive cruise at 80, but the whole time (and for the next couple years ugh) there is construction, they are widening the freeway to add another lane. So for 80% of my freeway driving I'm usually around 50-60mph, and that's on the good days when traffic is constantly moving.

The other 30% is city driving, and nothing here is flat.

So overall I'm pretty happy with it.

What am I doing wrong? I have 2200 miles on the truck and avg 16.8 mpg. I see all the post about great gas mileage and I can just squeeze 250 miles out of a 18gallon tank. I have the 4x4 sport and not the FX4 package, didn't think that 4x4 would lower the expected mpg by 5-6. 90% of my driving is highway running 65-70 mph. Any suggestions on improving the gas mileage. :headbang:

I'll throw this update in here. We recently traveled about 2000 miles over the last 5 days for holiday stuff. And the mileage wasn't that bad. We got anywhere between 20 to 26 mpg depending on the speed, which is only slightly below (~2mpg) what we would usually be getting in the summer. The 20mpg was when we were cruising on the freeway at 75-78mph, so not surprising there. The 26mpg came with multiple tanks, when we were trucking along at 45-55mph on county roads through an ice storm in Northern Wisconsin, and again down the freeway through a snow storm at the same speed in 4WD in Northern Lower Michigan.

All in all, I was pretty pleased with the winter trip mileage. Now back to short trips back and forth to work and getting bad mileage (16-18mpg) because of that.

Is your commute a lot of hills/mountains or mostly flat?
Have you made any mods to the truck that would affect aerodynamics or engine performance? (i.e. lift/level, bigger tires, tune, extra lights that stick out into the air stream, etc.)
How high do the revs go when you're accelerating from a stoplight? (aka how aggressive is your driving style)
Regular drive mode or sport mode?
What tire pressure are you running?

I personally live in a semi-hilly area (not mountainous by any means, but +/-700ft hills on a drive is not unheard of);
have no mods to engine performance, tires, suspension, or rake, only 2 small extra lights on the front;
very rarely exceed 2500 rpms accelerating from a light (usually barely peg 2000rpms most of the time);
am using regular drive mode;
and am running 34psi in all tires currently.
And I can easily get the stated mileage ratings, and usually end up exceeding them (in the summer at least).

Other than that, I'm not sure what else to tell you.

Do you have larger than stock tires? Are you driving aggressively? Like always heavily accellerating instead of slowly?

I drive somewhat aggressively, but I don't have larger tires/wheels. I also only have the 4x4 with sport apprearance and not the FX4 package.

My Ranger is stock from the factory and haven't done any mods to it, except last night I did do the 2.5' level kit, I generally don't dog it or drive aggressively. I'm actually thinking of taking it to the dealer to find out why the mpg is so low. I have maintained all the tires to recommended inflation and my drive to and from work is basically flat driving here in DFW.

The lift will decrease gas mileage , but not that much...something else is wrong, do a hand calculation and see if its different.

"I generally don't dog it or drive aggressively" is a very subjective statement. One persons conservative driving style, is another persons aggressive style. That's why I was asking about numbers/rpms during acceleration.

MPG will get better over time once the engine breaks in a bit more. What grade fuel you running? What % ethanol?

Got 19.5 my last 2 tanks 100% city 4x4 with a 93 performance unleashed tune, Auto stop disabled(engine running always) little over 6000 miles on the clock 93 octane fuel. Idling kills the mileage on this engine I've found from the instantaneous readout.

'19 xlt 4x4 sport with right at 2000 miles (had it a month) and I'm getting 20.9 combined driving. I don't hot rod it around or putt around like an old man, just normal old driving. On a side note I went into the engineering screen and adjusted the percentage as was posted in another thread (to re-calibrate the mpg read out) and the fuel mileage on the display was identical to my hand calculations.

Also the only mods are a soft roll up tonneau cover and eyecatcher tailgate letters lol.
