I’m looking at buying a 22 ranger Xlt fx4 next week but can’t find many high milage examples and I put on a lot of miles as a electrician for work and want to make sure this will be reliable. Along side if it is reliable what are some helpful hints or suggestions for a new owner u wish u knew? Thank you.

Bob, Sid @Msfitoy is probably out driving his Ranger and won't see this for a while. :captain: I think he's trying to rack up more miles after sitting for a few weeks due to high gas prices.?

Gavin while every manufacturer has their problems most of us here have had very good luck with ours. Nothing is going to be perfect but I think overall the Ranger has been trouble free for most of us including myself. I've owned many trucks and this is by far my favorite one. Sid will eventually see this and chime in but I know he's had ZERO issues with his and it's pretty weighted down (5,500lbs) with his RTT and gear.

Plan on changing out the rear shocks. The OEM ones are not very good. Also consider getting a few extra tie-down rings and stainless bolts from the local hardware store, as the bed will have the empty bolt holes that Ford was too cheap to fill.

I found that a tray for the center console storage area to be handy. You can find them on Amazon.

If it's like other late-model Fords the weak spot will be the transmission.
Best thing you can do for long-term reliability is change ALL the fluids at half the recommended intervals or more.
I got 212,000 miles out of my old Sport Trac with this. Trans let go at 132k anyway but like I said they're a weak spot.
Every 5000 miles synthetic oil and filter.
Every 30,000 miles rear axle lube and transfer case lube.
Every 50,000 miles transmission fluid, front axle lube, coolant, spark plugs, power steering fluid.
Change brake fluid every time brakes are replaced.

Easy and functional mods:
Tailgate damper, of course.
Console tray, as mentioned. Makes the console space more efficient.
Mountains 2 Metal lower grille insert. Looks better and keeps rocks off the intercooler.
Bug deflector. I have yet to have one that actually deflects bugs but they keep stone chips off the hood.
Weathertech floor mats.

Hi Gavin,

Ford tests to the equivalent of 150,000 miles of a 90% customer, which you are well below this 90% customer, eg. Mining or oil field trucks. The 5G Ranger has a heritage of being Ford Tough which means something in my opinion. I think 5G is a worthy truck which will provide the reliability you desire. Good luck with your decision..

Best,
Phil
