Consumer Reports relies heavily on owner surveys for their reliability rankings; while their reviews are based on staff experience driving the vehicle, the rest comes from surveys. So it was originally owner distain that drove reliability rankings down and owners that brought it back up. Given the short lifespan of the 5G Ranger, this tracks. Jeep has always ranked at the bottom of CR reliability rankings; the Grand Cherokee is the all-time least reliable vehicle based on CR owner surveys.Somewhat of a dated article (March 2022), but Consumer Reports, which has never been kind to the Ford Ranger, finally comes out with a reliability ranking which puts the Ford Ranger and Honda Ridgeline tied for most reliable mid sized truck. Tacoma comes in 3rd, and the Gladiator, dead last after the Colorado, Canyon and Frontier. The Ranger and Ridgeline have a predicted reliability rating of “Above Average”, while the Tacoma is rated as “Average”. Gladiator is rated poor. When you consider the fact that the Ranger and Ridgeline are really two different types of trucks, i.e., Rangers’ body on frame versus the Ridgelines’ Unibody construction, it makes the Ford Rangers high rating even more impressive, especially given CR’s past disdain for American trucks.
While I will admit that the Tacoma is a decent truck, and it is still the top seller, it is not the mythical “most reliable” that it has been branded as, and which has kept their values so high.
Most reliable midsize truck
Reason I got the Ranger over other makes included hi reliability rating by CR (Consumer Reports). For those who do not know, CR is a non profit. (Their executives do not exactly starve ; CEO made over $700K in 2020. Still pretty lean for a company with around 600 employees, so CEO and other execs are not greedy pigs.) They take no money from any advertisers, sellers, or manufacturers, and fight companies who would use their data as a product endorsement Any CR apparent "disdain" for any vehicle is reflected by and a reflection of the data. That is why I am a mbr of CR, they do not lie or bend the truth for money, rather provide empirically based, impartial info on which consumers can rely for intelligent decisions. I was so glad to see an American maker like Ford, finally break out of the crap pack of historically poorly built vehicles. Alas, Jeep and their Gladiator remain quite solidly in that camp of junk builds.Somewhat of a dated article (March 2022), but Consumer Reports, which has never been kind to the Ford Ranger, finally comes out with a reliability ranking which puts the Ford Ranger and Honda Ridgeline tied for most reliable mid sized truck. There may be another factor causing the Toyota to be low in this comparison.Somewhat of a dated article (March 2022), but Consumer Reports, which has never been kind to the Ford Ranger, finally comes out with a reliability ranking which puts the Ford Ranger and Honda Ridgeline tied for most reliable mid sized truck. Surveys can (and many times are) designed in a way to skew the results. I am always curious to see the questions and how they were asked.Reminds me of that old cartoon with a graph showing percentage of people who would throw a survey in the bin - 98% said No
