This has been happening for quite a while now and I thought I'd reach out on this forum before taking my Ranger to a mechanic. My truck vibrates whenever I put it in reverse and step on the brake pedal. The vibration shakes the whole cab and it sounds like I'm side-swiping a car when backing out of a parking spot. It has scared me multiple times thinking I have hit someone's car but I didn't. When I let off the brakes it stops and the vibration only occurs when the truck is in reverse. Does anyone know what the cause of my problem is?

For starters the title made me think other things that I should probably shouldn't have thought of........ 🙉🙈🙊

Second off it sounds like you might have an issue inside the transmission if it hasn't been serviced or if it's got an internal problem. Another possibility is a engine mount starting to fail. Essentially this is a engine load type thing with low RPM with the transmission in gear at a stop. If you are not mechanically inclined enough to figure this one out, I would highly recommend taking it to your local Ford dealer or trusted service repair shop.

If it only vibrates when you step on the brakes, then it is probably the rear brakes. Lots of the Rangers came from the factory with rear brakes less than stellar and they only get worse as time goes on.

I second- broken motor - transmission mount as a high probability.
Open the hood and watch engine movement when switching from park to reverse and reverse to drive - do you note excessive side to side movement?
And most likely - while holding foot on the brake press the gas pedal and let off when in reverse may enhance the issue for a confirmation and stronger vibration.

Wow - things don’t always seem as they might first appear.

My brain is hard-wired to think of how old-school drum brakes self-adjust when in reverse, so my mind went straight to something (pad, retention clip, spring) binding between the calliper and the rotor.

After seeing replies by @Frenchy and @airline tech , I’m abandoning anything I once thought I knew to allow me to view these things with a completely open mind.

You can also try backing it up a steep hill or driveway to take the brakes out of the equation ...
