As far as I know, the backup lights do not come on. I’ve taken apart the edge shifter that looks similar. It has little micro switches for all the positions. I had to replace the park one on my wife’s edge.

Camera is powered all the time, the input change is triggered by the reverse switch almost guaranteed (because it comes on while doing 70 on the expressway if you put it in reverse).
Its kinda scary, isn't it? I did it once by accident when I forgot to let go of the button after popping in to S mode and pushed it forward again to put it back into D. Heart stopping, cringing panic attack for a moment, then "Hey! that does work!"

I did it on purpose... I also put it in park, not as fun...

Same but I wouldn't call it balls...
I've been trailering for 20+ years. Never had a camera before this so I never even had the chance to look back at the trailer other than the side and rear views. Honestly, I can tell more from the side view mirrors than I can from the rear view mirror and the rear view mirror tells me more than the very close up tail gate camera would.

Since I haven't ever needed this camera thing (other than getting the trailer on the ball which is supremely nice!) for towing before, I don't see the need to pop into reverse at speed as a value added gamble to see if the camera comes on.

But on the topic of cameras that WOULD be useful.
  • Front nose break over cam
  • CHMSL Brake Light wide angle cam looking into bed and out next to the wheels / behind truck

so if every position has a switch, what would the compooter think if it was in drive and reverse at the same time. there must be a switch for reverse lights and camera unless the compooter controls those

My camper does it at any speed, plus i've seen some other vehicles that have rearview mirrors that double as camera screens.
What camera do you have for the camper? Is there anything that will tie into our normal dash interface as opposed to a second monitor?

Furrion 5" camera. It's expensive for what you get, but it has an audio feature that is a game changer. Also it only comes on when the headlights are on which reminds you to turn them on.
