I saw those too but I like the idea of a separate cam. If anything goes wrong with mine I just pop the camera out. With those you'll have to take the whole mirror out and either send it out to get fixed or replace it. I know some are pricey but it's better to buy a good one and get it over with one time.

Mine is a 4K Thinkware U1000 and has excellent day/night vision. You want one with really good clarity to capture license plates and clear images in case of an accident.

I'm just not sure if anything important is inside the mirror ? , it's elaborately mounted , that's for sure ...
and the one I saw had a zoom in back up as part off it ... hate my back up camera ...

I forgot which one you have. Does it have the day/night auto adjustment? If not it should be an easy swap.

How much was the mirror cam? Maybe you could take some of your casino winnings, skip the bar one night and buy one?

Yeah , that will happen ... it appears that some of these go OVER the OEM mirror , not replace it...

Does Amazon carry it? If so you could always buy one and try it for a couple weeks. That way you can see how good or bad it works and they give you 30 days with free returns.

I would like to have my rear camera outside to replace the factory one ... after thinking ? the setup I'd like to have would be a license plate camera that replaces the factory backup camera (does a plug and play exist for that? ) then the rear dash cam would be inside rear window , reverse would activate the factory camera (that is now upgraded to license plate )and I could switch on the rear dash cam at will , that sound doable? ?

I think first order of business is to relocate the factory one at the license plate , should help with the rain ? and backing up with tailgate down ... just hit 4000 miles and had first oil change so in my book , she's officially broken in , lots more sport mode and the cutting of wires shall now begin ! I think I saw a thread on her about the factory camera plug and what wire is what ... I have hated the backup camera since day one anyway, it's outta here !

I'm not sure relocating it there will help. If it's raining especially with wind it's still going to get hit by it. You could fabricate a small shield over the top but then that might make it dark and shadowy? Whatever you do I'd make sure you can return it to stock if it doesn't work like you want it to.

Also I think Sid @Msfitoy has a bunch of other cameras set up on his so maybe instead of deleting the rear one you could disconnect it and add something better with another screen inside like to an iPad.

If I can relocate, the old FORD camera would be a good place for one of those led Ford light up emblems , or 3rd brake light maybe ?... I don't even look at the screen on my truck now anyway so it's no loss really ?

I remember seeing Sids and he has some cams set up under his truck and I think a forward facing one and they look great with a really clear view. You could set up a ram mount or something similar to hold a tablet and use it as needed?

I don't really want anything "extra " , that's why I was thinking mirror cam , screen built in , nothing extra mounted , you can split the view between front and rear , or just stream the rear or use as a mirror , I would have 2 views in reverse , one from the factory on my sync screen and one from my back glass cam showing on my mirror ...
