Depending on what your doing, a torsen rear diff can also work very well and is actually a decently cheap and easy install. Would likely need to override the computer nannies though.

This video helped me better understand rearends. I watched it a year ago but at the time I was obsessed with suspension (still am). Lately I've been researching more and more on forums about rear end builds that I actually caught a lot that I missed the first time watching the video.

So welding the spider gears in our open diff or even using a mini spool still uses the same oem case and is hard on the oem axle shafts. Looks like I need to look into possibly 35 spline axle shafts and a m220 spool. Doubt I'll find one but something always leads to another. This is why I didn't start this thread off thinking I know it all even if I think this forum is full of old men that think I'm crazy ???
You learn something new everyday!

This old man loves what you do/are doing to your truck.

Keep hotrodding alive!

Old men are just young men with more experience...
Some old guys were that way when they were young, too.
And some of the more adventurous didn't manage to get old...

Life is not a dress rehearsal. Try stuff. But learn from mistakes.

Keep learning, and (hopefully) one day you will be old, too.
Then you can pop some popcorn and laugh at the young bucks doing their things while they ignore your advice.

I fix Pink jeeps
I have some experiences with this. I had a 04 4Runner with a lockright (basically always locked except on very slow turns).

You will likely need to fully disable traction control. My Toyota didn’t know what the hell was going on with both wheels turning at exactly the same speed. Roll stability kicked in a lot. The ranger seems to be even more of a nanny, but I assume with the e-locker it compensates for it through the module that controls tcs.

If you have any remote chance of driving in snow/ice/heavy rain: I highly recommend you stay open diff. You will spin in circles all day. Get a selectable locker.

Another note is it will get very annoying very fast driving it around town. The outside tire will chirp on turns and everyone will look at you like somethings wrong with your car. You won’t be able to make sharp turns anymore. (You’ll also leave black tire marks everywhere from grinding the outside wheel on the pavement).

Another point that you seem to have covered and are prepared for: this will put way more stress on your axle shafts. Spools are generally for trail-only rigs or people who want to get sideways (or drag cars).

My 2cents.

Next issue to overcome...axles to fit that spool and the stock Ford axle housing. Since both Jeep and Ford use the M220, you may be able to source custom axle shafts from the Jeep Afermarket. However...

Bearings, seals, retainer, and tone ring will be your next hurdle. As you may or may not know, the tone ring for the rear wheel speed is actually inside the axle housing unlike a Jeep which is outside the axle housing. The Ford tone ring presses on the axle shaft. Ford does NOT sell bearings, seals, retainers or tone rings for the axle in the Ranger. If the axle seal goes bad, Ford makes Ranger owners buy an entire axle assembly. Ford does however sell this kit for Bronco owners who are changing things around.....

BRONCO M220 REAR AXLE OUTER BEARING/SEAL KIT| Part Details for M-1225-C | Ford Performance Parts

Question here is......does the tone ring in the Bronco have the same number of targets as the Ranger? My guess is...probably. The issue will be as to whether these items can be pressed on to the 35 spline axles you procure. That is....is the diameter where the bearing, retainer, tone ring reside the same on a 35 spline as it is on a 32 spline axle? Next up...what is the dimension from the bearing seating shoulder to the face of the wheel flange on the axle?

Good luck with your endeavors.

Agree 100%. Been there, done that, lucky enough to survived it, smart enough to not do it again. Yes there has been changes to technology, not so much in this case. Physics is still the same. Wait till he backs out of his driveway and twists his rear suspension all out of shape, if he doesn’t tear up something.

This is what I was learning about watching a video of a guy with his gladiator going to 35 spline. The 35 spline axle shafts are a bigger diameter and require bigger diameter bearings.

So it looks like the cheapest thing to do is put a mini spool and find the limits.

Or

The more reasonable thing to do is to find an f150 rear end with a LSD, cut off the spring perch's, truss it, install link pivots and have fun. Then I would have a more open aftermarket.

I'm not too hard-headed wanting to keep the m220. I actually need a wider rear axle I just have multiple projects going on. So it seems like I need to stick to my buy once cry once methodology.

If there was a spool specifically for our ranger for $200 and axle shafts for $200 I would just stick with the m220.

Did you say, Toyota? Haha jk. I usually hold down the TC button until it says advanced trac off but in the rain in snow I do keep it on and even turn on the locker when I stop on ice.

This goes into depth on the different carriers and c clip vs semi float vs full float with some other goodies.

Went to the Yukon site and they have the factory elocker for sale and it states 32 spline so I guess that means I have 32 spline axles since I have the elocker.

I'm starting my off-road racing next month and at a rally track and will keep the stock housing for now with abs disabled to be able to get sideways in the dirt. I'll upgrade to a 9 inch when I can. I'm currently fabricating +5 control arms and a bed cage for the truck so this is definitely not a priority.or in the budget.
