Question regarding automatic headlights (2020 XLT)

Yesterday, took a little drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway in western NC - at least part that is open with the Helene recovery. Along the trip were a series of 4 tunnels. They were short, but not well lit, unlike some interstate highway tunnels. I've gotten into the habit of leaving my headlights set in the Automatic zone. Its very convenient, especially with the auto bright feature. So, no worries, right? However, when we got into the tunnel, the headlights remained in the normal "Daytime Running Lamp" mode, which was not enough light, and I had to manually switch over to regular headlights each time.

I was under the assumption that the headlights worked simply by ambient lighting. In other words,light level drops (i.e. night, parking garage, tunnel) and the regular headlights will come on. Is this not the case? Is there a delay that I wouldn't have had time enough to contend with?

Curious, more than anything. Thanks in advance!

Automatic headlights will turn on after a set period of time when going into a shaded area. How long exactly? I don't remember the exact number, but it is usually around 5-10 seconds.

Yeah there is a delay, don't know how long it is either. When I drive into my garage it takes a bit before my headlights come on. It's probably there to keep overpasses from flashing your headlights. Haven't seen anything in Forscan to adjust it either.

Try changing this setting - BCM
To my knowledge this is untested

Note: Factory Hex (As-Built) for this line is:
0100-0003-0058
So try changing it to (1) as follows
0101-0003-00xx
Once you write it the last 2 will change to a different check sum (automatically)

There are mote settings that you can try if this does not work

Its strange though as I don't drive in tunnels but when I transition into my garage the headlights kick on fairly quickly and my setting on this line is set to the factory of 15-Seconds

There is a slight delay. When it is a dark and rainy day, mine will turn off and on so I throw a small rubber cupholder pad over the sensor on the dash.

Mine come on when I pull into my shop, about 2 secs, but I'm going slow so there's probably a difference when at hwy speed

There is some delay for sure, but I don't know how long it really is.

I can set the delay from my steering wheel controls. Or you can go totally manual on the dash switch.

I prefer the way my Frontier is. No automatic headlights and therefore I don't have to give a damn

I just turn them on manually and don't use the automatic setting. Lights stay on under overpass. I do use the auto setting when high beams are needed and find that feature satisfactory.
