Has anyone attempted to pull a tree stump out of the ground with their Ranger?

A old 14 ish inch cherry tree died and I cut it down with a chainsaw and I’m wondering if I might be able to pull the stump out with my 2019 Ranger. It’s a 2 wheel drive with factory tow package and I do have a locking differential. The truck would be on the driveway for max traction.

I’ve dug down and cut most if not all of the lateral roots (that was a workout) and should be ready to attempt to pull. Am I nuts to even consider this?

I pulled 20 stumps with my 202 Ford Ranger Fx4, no problem. Not sure if can be done with 2wd.

Just rent one of those machines that grind up the stump, 2 wd will not get it done. IMO

I have done this before and it worked just nicely. The Greeks gave us math to simplify our life, I find it handy.
Clever, but that doesn't seem any safer than any other pull.
Good thing the chain didn't break, or slip off of the stump. I wonder where that chain and cable would end up after springing up, and off of that compressed tire?

Couldn't you at least stand farther away? My $.02.

Pulled a similar stump with my 2009 Ranger 2WD. If you done good prep work, it should come out easy.

Might work. But, you’ll know in the first try. If you dig long enough, might. That’s a gif sized cherry tree stump. Let it rot a couple of years first, after cutting it off down in the ground.
Good luck!

I tried to pull a stump with my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD and couldn't do it and all it had left connected was like a 2x4 sized root. I dug all around it with my backhoe and put the Jeep in 4 low, which also locks the rear. With all 4 wheels putting power through low gear and having about 1,000 lbs more weight than my Ranger, it didn't even come close. I ended having to cut the last bit of root with my saw and then I could pull the stump out of the hole.

My 2WD (w/ locker) would be less capable. And it's nicer, so I wouldn't do that sort of work with it. Plus, I ended up buying a stump grinder for my tractor as I have taken down so many trees on my property.

We did use the Jeep to pull the big trees close to the house down.

For reference, this was what we started with (actually, I had already taken out several trees at this point).

Yeah, I would definitely not be standing upright next to it. Maybe crouch or lay down if you have to be that close to the switches. Also, that stump looks like it has been dead a while. Probably easier than a fresh cut with still live roots.

Glad you're ok.

As a professional I've got to note that you did create a barber chair in this case and there was additional risk on getting end of the tree moving into random direction and possibly hitting you.

Please use face cut and proper felling technique in future.

That's my Father in law cutting. Been taking down trees for a long time. The tree was preloaded in the direction of the Jeep. It was only going to go one direction.

Depends if the stump is dead and partly rotted, but probably not.

After plenty more digging, using my Milwaukee Hackzall with a 12 inch pruning blade and my chainsaw (goodbye old chain) the Ranger and I were successful.
Hard work and took some time but I’m not one to shy away from hard work. I think if it would have been a 4 wheel drive it would have come out sooner but it worked.
Can’t upload a video, it tells me the file is too large.
Here are a few photos.

Great to see you didn't use the ball hitch. Ball hitches should never be used for this kind of thing. Guys have been killed using the ball for recovery.

Just be careful out there guys.

Also, is a running start ever a good idea?
I read your link and that is scary stuff. I don’t actually have a hitch since I don’t have a reason to tow. Appreciate the info, it was helpful.
