I have done this before and it worked just nicely. The Greeks gave us math to simplify our life, I find it handy.

Has anyone attempted to pull a tree stump out of the ground with their Ranger?

A old 14 ish inch cherry tree died and I cut it down with a chainsaw and I’m wondering if I might be able to pull the stump out with my 2019 Ranger. It’s a 2 wheel drive with factory tow package and I do have a locking differential. The truck would be on the driveway for max traction.

I’ve dug down and cut most if not all of the lateral roots (that was a workout) and should be ready to attempt to pull. Am I nuts to even consider this?

I pulled out several stumps with my 2019 Ranger. I used the saw and pick axe to break the stump up pretty good. Took a little strain on the stump and then had my son take the chain saw to the leftover roots. Strain, roots, strain, more roots. Both came out pretty easly. I was using a snatch-um strap. A come along might work also. Never pass up a chance to redneck engineer something!

Neat little lever there.

Might be easier with a pinch bar (?) with a round hole pommel. Gives about 6-10 fold mechanical advantage.

Do it. I have pulled out three with my ranger. And many more have stayed in the ground. If they come out easy its great. Just do not get a 50ft running start and dont force anything. 1, 2 pulls ok, 6 inch slack small speed okay. After that, done, things will break if you go full send.
Most of my stumps where small 6 or 8 inch trees. Nothing big.

Hell yes you should do it , don't listen to all the naysayers here , speed and momentum are your friends, if done correctly, you should be able to have the stump land right in the bed !!! (get multiple camera angles if possible)
Pictures or it didnt happen LOL
I would and have, broke a yank strap too, dont let anyone near it because it will cut you in half!
so I had to pull out the logging chain, had to hit it more than once to get it to loose up but in the end the Ranger won!, I also had bought a D-Ring Hitch Adpt. that says its good to 58k lbs dont worry it wont break because the hitch or frame aint good to 58k LOL

One of the reasons I bought this truck is because I (my family) inherited a 200 year old farm property and I was the one most able to send to it. Lots of trees and stuff. I/we pay for other people to do stuff like that. Less destructive to my Ranger that I drive every day.

Come alongs are great tools when used appropriately.

After plenty more digging, using my Milwaukee Hackzall with a 12 inch pruning blade and my chainsaw (goodbye old chain) the Ranger and I were successful.
Hard work and took some time but I’m not one to shy away from hard work. I think if it would have been a 4 wheel drive it would have come out sooner but it worked.
Can’t upload a video, it tells me the file is too large.
Here are a few photos.

Haha. very creative rope work. if you had watered the rootstock a day or two before, there would probably have been a little more tread left on the tires

That main stump is not all that big. So yeah, looks like it was just fine.

I pulled a nice size palm rootball out a few years back, had to dig out around it. Also after the hurricane I pulled my trumpet tree back up and staked it as well as an avacado tree across the street.
