Just a thought. Every town pretty much has a senior center. We like to feel that we can care for ourselves but in times of trouble this ends being great resource. They know all the different ways to get help as well as other seniors in your local area giving a helping hand. They get a sense of of still being needed helping other local folks in need. Drop by your local center and start the conversations. I bet you’re going to be surprised at the army that appears to help in your time of need!

Just to add to Ricks suggestion if you or your parents are involved in a local church they usually have a great support group there willing to help. I know a few friends and customers here who said the church was a really big help with their elder parents and even those who had Covid and couldn't get out for food and meds while sick.

thank you guys those are great suggestions i am going to look into soon! took mom to the primary care dr today and she recommended that mom go to a skilled nursing facility to do more intense rehab for a month or so. i have very mixed feelings on this. i know on one side she does need more than the home visit rehab does in an hour once or twice a week. but ive never really heard many good things about nursing places. typically they are over crowded and way understaffed... it would take away some of the current load on me as the nurses would be supervising her medications, meals and daily life stuff that im trying to do now. a challenge is finding a good snf that takes medicare and is close enough to visit daily and keep track of her and the care she gets. ive also heard so many horror stories of nursing homes keeping people and milking out the insurance or medicare pay and even taking peoples homes and property. that scares me of course. in a way it is trading one stress for another on my end. when shes home i know how she is, at another hospital or nursing place i dont. feels like a catch 22 either way.

Mark, like anything there are good and bad ones out there. My grandmother had to go into one that was close to my parents house. My mom would go there every day to visit and it turned out to be a very nice place, you just have to do a lot of research before hand. At first my grandmother didn't like it (she was use to being independent) but after a while she came to like it and made many new friends there. The staff was great and the took great care of her all the way to the end, some even went to the wake.

Take your time on this decision and really ask around at the same places we mentioned above. It sounds like it's only short term care and it could really help get her back on track quicker. The good thing is you do not have to keep her there if she doesn't like it or feel she isn't getting the care she deserves. It's a tough choice and a lot of weight on you but take some time this weekend and think it through. Good luck my friend and you know we're always here for you!

Good thoughts your way as you traverse this troubled time. As someone in the long term care field I suggest contacting your state's ombudsman as well as talking to your mothers doctors. They will have excellent suggestions as to which facilities have personnel that will help your mother the best. My own facility is attached to the town hospital which allows doctors to basically walk across the hall to meet with patients as needed.

Again I wish the best to you and your family and I hope you find somewhere close enough to visit often.

I agree with Dave completely. In her final years, my grandma ended up in a couple of skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes. The first one was completely unplanned, as the need arose suddenly from a bizarre health episode (don't really know what happened, but it left her really weak and in need of lots of assistance and therapy). She was only in there a month or two, but she hated it. To be fair, part of the hate could have stemmed from the fact that just days before moving into the facility she had been happily, fully-independently living at home with no plans to do otherwise. After she returned home from that first stint, she realized that she wasn't getting any younger and she would almost certainly have need of such services again, so she did her own research on the local options. Sure enough, about a year later she was once again had to move into a facility. She got into the facility of her choice and lived out the rest of her days there (it was a large facility with multiple levels of care so she could bounce between standard nursing home care to skilled nursing as needed). Every time I visited her she commented on how lucky she was to be there and how great of a place it was.

So do your research and hopefully you can find a great place for your mom. Getting her into the right situation can definitely really be positive thing for her.

Still praying for you all!

i took all of the suggestions yall had today! it was a long day but a productive one. after asking around a few places moms pcp and i both decided on the same place, baylor scott white in patient rehab. some of the nursing homes i went by were pretty awful. i dont wanna sound like an ass but it kinda makes me wanna just die suddenly one day at home in bed or while im fishing or something other than being in a nursing home. most of them looked pretty nice at casual glance, a couple were fancy. but no one in any of them looked happy, patients or staff. even the ones i only called sounded grumpy... i also got listed as signer / agent or owner on mom and dads accounts so i can handle the bills for them and make sure things are paid on time. took mom out for a ride in the geriatric cruiser (buick) around town for a bit just to be outside. then i made some mexican food she likes for dinner. her blood sugar is staying pretty level so im happy for that. dads getting a little better with her meds and time so that makes me feel a little better if i have to leave them alone to go any where. in the middle of all this extra stuff and less sleep i guess i managed to get my self sick lol. sinus infection, sore throat. so i took some extra vitamins and im gonna sleep earlier if i can. still got a lot to do but it was a good day. i feel better knowing a plans set for rehab and i that i can monitor the bills for them. apparently the cell phone bill and internet for mom and dad was 3 months behind. that cost me about 400 lol. or 4.2 tanks of gas... Thank you all for the support suggestions and prayers. I dont think id be doing as well without yall!

Mark, I’m so sorry to hear about your mother’s stroke. It is amazing what a good rehab can do for stroke victims. I will pray for your mother’s recovery. I will also pray that God will help you and your father through this so ya’ll will be strong when she’s ready to come back home. God Bless you all.

thank you everyone! it was a good weekend for mom, she moved around on her walker pretty well and got out a few times. she said a few more words and a couple sentences. my sinus infection is a bit better tonight last night was awful. im sending the request for admitting to the baylor rehab program in the morning and hoping they will go for it. i was warned on the phone about red tape with medicare and limited space for patients... but im doing all i can and advocating as much as possible so its not in my hands what baylor and medicare says.

This week things are more calm. mom seems to be doing ok but i havent noticed any improvement in several days now. im hoping that this is not the peak of her recovery. her memory is still nearly gone and her speaking ability is the same as it was weeks ago. i havent given up hope of course but its rough to see her not herself if that makes sense.
