My Ranger, Truck, is basically stock with just the addition of a GFB DV T-9465. As you all know we pull a 7000 lb camper which does make Truck "work" when towing, but otherwise is a daily driver for "an old guy".
We left Monday for Maine from home in Virginia, with the trailer. Ran our usual 65 mph up I-81. Crossed over into Pa, and pulled into welcome center for a break, when the "wrench" light comes on.
Scan Gauge indicates it is a P0299 which I know has something to do with the turbo system. We make it up to exit 16 and go to Keystone Ford, luckily without it going into "limp" mode.
Out of town, stuck....DAMN !!!!!
But, tech comes out with laptop, plugs into Truck, and verifies P0299. Service tech tells me about campground near and we pull there, and luckily get a spot for as long as needed, drop and set camper up., and run Truck back to Ford.
Now it's Monday afternoon, but I am assured that being out of town and stuck, I will get priority. Under my extended warranty, they get me into a 2025 Ram pickup for as long as needed.
Tuesday tech runs a full diagnostic on Truck verifying a P0299 underboost code. Tech checks the entire system and after 2 hours finds something.....the aftermarket GFB DV is causing the problem. Apparently the spring supplied with the GFB is different from the OE, and under heavy boost like when towing a 7000 lb trailer, constantly on and off the throttle, going from high boost to letting off throttle causes the GFB DV to leak air, causing the underboost problem.
Tech said I was lucky to take care of it asap as it could have caused the turbo to go byebye !!! He believes that under normal driving, solo (not towing heavy trailer or load) it wouldn't have happened.
So, no OE valve in stock, they order one Tues afternoon. We're stuck, but at least have a place to stay and a rental.
Valve comes in on Thursday early afternoon, one hour to install and road test....they call me and I go to pick up Truck....expecting a bill even with the extended warranty cause an aftermarket part DID cause the problem.
Surprise.service mgr on work sheet did not indicate aftermarket part at all....just that the valve went bad. So, 4 days of rental, and all dealer labor/diagnostic/parts were NO CHARGE...covered by warranty.
This whole post is ment to be just information for those who have a DV and tow or load your truck.....this may/may not happen.....had no problem with the GFB DV when installed, but this was the first time since install that I had a problem, while under heavy loading.
This is NOT ment to indicate the GFB DV is defective or bad, just that when under heavy load it may not work to the trucks advantage. When I was driving solo/no load, it was great, and I could definitely feel a difference in throttle response.
