Where is the outside temperature sensor(s) and should it be updating in real-time or is there supposed to be a delay?

I have noticed on multiple occasions that the display reads vastly different than what the outside temperature really is and takes multiple minutes to update to a more accurate temperature.

This afternoon, it was 93 degrees outside and when I started up the truck it displayed 80 degrees. I am not sure if that was the previous day temp reading before I shut it off the previous day. After about 5 minutes, it then started to increment 1 to 2 degrees at a time over the course of a few seconds and stopped at 91 degrees.

I am just wondering if this is normal behavior or if something is wonky.

Hi V,

Sounds like normal function...takes a while to get to ambient temp after start up.

I don't think it's wonky, I think all cars are sort of slow or a bit inaccurate. My cars sit in the garage so it's slow to update. I don't know where the sensor is.

I really can't say exactly how the outside temperature reading is updated on the Ranger but I have researched this issue for another vehicle. The vehicle only updated the temperature reading after being powered up for about 5 min. and traveled more than 20 mph.

YMMV.

yeah it's slower than any other car I've owned, not a big deal but slow. And I find's Fords implementation of ACC about the same as other vehicles I've owned, sometimes it does a decent job of maintaining the desired temp, other times it fails to. Given a choice I'd prefer old fashioned dials, but since I bought a Lariat, had no choice.

My beef with ACC is that it's clunky when the car in front of you changes lanes and it suddenly mashes it to come back up to speed. I can live with it, but would like it to have more brains to come back up to speed without mashing the speed. I do, however, love the ACC, but this is the first vehicle I've had with it.

I meant automatic climatic control - but yeah I agree with the cruise control behavior, it put my wife in panic mode when we were on a trip last week.

Ah, Sorry. I don't use auto climate control, so that wasn't in my brain.

It is located behind the front grille. It should be updating close to real-time. There is no reason it should not be accurate while you are driving. Mine is accurate.

I notice that mine is pretty quick to respond in real time. For example, in summer, with the truck staying in the garage all night, in the morning, it will give a reading corresponding to the (relatively) cool interior of our garage. Once out the garage door and out on the streets, it will gradually curve upwards, one degree at a time, until it gets to the outside temperature. It only takes a few seconds to change, and it is usually the same or very close to readings from other sources such as my cell phone, online newspapers, etc.

Well, you could own a late-model Honda. The electrical connector to the temperature varistor, sits behind the grill where any rain or wash water can enter it. When the connector gets water in it, the temperature always says about 76°F. Honda's fix? Blow compressed air at the connector.

Thats not the outside temp sensor…it’s the driver’s seat reading. Your rear end takes time to warm up once seated and driving. ?
