Anyone in this thread know if the standard receivers like Curt will work with a Sport bumper?

I know the Sport is different because when I went to mount a Dee-Zee bumper step it wasn't compatible. I don't think any Sports come with a trailer hitch.
someone can correct me but aftermarket receivers sit lower and do not need to modify the bumper.

Factory receiver's sit a bit higher, and thus have bumper modification

I just took delivery of a 2022 Ford Ranger Lariat and it appears to have everything I need to tow with except for the 2" ball.

There's a hole in the rear bumper where I can take out the plug and put in a towing ball.

Under the bumper is the needed 4-pin electrical connection and the loops (see pictures) where you can secure a chain from any trailer that you may be wanting to tow.

In the cabin, there's anti-sway and towing controls

However, I can find NOTHING about putting the ball into the bumper of a 5G Ranger. Not in the owners manual and not on YT and not online that I've found

I learned this while visiting a U-Haul center where the tech knew immediately that I did not need to install the receiver bar on the bottom of the vehicle but the ball he had did not have a shank long enough to go through the hole in the bumper and be secured with a very large nut screwed on far enough to allow a cotter pin through the shank below it. The shank length of the ball at U-Hall was 3 1/4 inches. The shank needs to be longer, but I don't know what that needed length is.

Before I install the tow ball, I just want to ask around if this is acceptable for towing where my biggest load will likely be my 825lb motorcycle.

I have the same question… Just wish someone knew the answer… Totally understand getting a hitch but I done want one at this point… Just want a 2” ball to work with my little tiny trailer that is lifted via axle flip… Just want the correct size ball to fit the bumper..

3" 1/4 shank fits. I got that on mine. But unless the trailer is lifted, it's useless. I tried and came to the conclusion that i need a hitch. The rear is just too high. I must precise that i have a tremor so it's higher, but still not the best. I put 2 washers to elevate the ball a bit more, and it still rubs.

All Rangers have both these features. The trailer tow mode really just adjusts shift points and I believe maybe thottle responce. It is controlled by a button on the console ahead of the shifter with a little trailer on it. Press it and a trailer indicator will show up on the dash. It resets to off at each ignition cycle. The anti-sway system is always active, but I believe it can be deactivated in the dash menus. I don’t mess with it.

An important thing to remember with bumper towing, if you are looking at renting a trailer, make sure to verify that they will rent it to you when you are towing with the bumper instead of a mounted hitch. I used to work at a Home Depot tool rental, and we were not allowed to rent even one of our empty trailers if you only had a ball on the bumper.

What will the weight of the trailer be with the load on it? Bumper limit is 3,500lb, but Ford also states the trailer needs brakes for trailers over 1,650lb. As I understand, with only a 4 pin connector you 'll need a surge brake setup on the trailer to reach the 3,500lb max bumper tow.

No one was replying with first hand information. I ran with what the Ford site said would work.
If Ford was correct... great.
If I was wrong that would guarantee that someone with the right answer would post and correct me.
Either way MOSDIF589 gets the answer he wants.

@Simon Says did post with pictures that a 3.25 shank works. Picture also showed you need to check that your trailer doesn’t hit the bumper when turning.

I would bet most of us that tow use the factory or aftermarket receiver hitch. Lets us get the ball hight right for a level trailer and the hitch out of the way when not towing.

If by the Ford one (mentioned above), the shank length is only 2 1/8". That is not long enough. Also, Simon Says stated that the 3 1/4" long shank will work, and he even has a picture of it installed. I provided a link to one that has the 3 1/4" length needed. The right answer has already been provided.

Did you read what I wrote?
Giving a wrong answer assures that every member with the correct answer will come out of hiding to post the correct answer and show me how smart they are and how dumb I am.
BUT it will get the correct answer to the question posted.
