I always liked the look of certain steel wheels, like these. I think I first noticed them on cop cars. Plain, but a circular dome with an array of holes is kind of a no-nonsense aesthetic. And the holes provide ccoling air for the brakes, so they aren't JUST decoration. Kind of blue-collar elegance, like racing machinery or military / aerospace hardware.

There are plain steelies that DON'T look good, mostly the ones designed to be used with wheel covers. But those can usually be improved with a baby moon cover to go over the ugly part.

I had chromed reverse wheels with chrome baby moons on a fibreglass body VW dune buggy - do they count?

Not for long... you know the story as soon as you're done cleaning it up.... the rain moves in.

I find it funny that steel wheels have become a styling statement.

I am old enough to remember new cars coming with plain steel wheels with what was refered to as a poverty cap or dig dish cap. There was really only two reasons they were on the car when delivered.
1. You couldn't afford what you wanted.
2. The next stop after taking delivery was the tire shop to have the Crager, Keystone, ET or American racing wheels of your choice.
They definitely were not a styling choice.

Well really wanted to get the old work truck vibe and started by going the 'other direction'.
Remove alloy XLT wheels in place of 16x7 Stock Ford Steelies. Used a set of ST Maxx 265 75 16's.
Cooper website says 7" in the range of rim width. Pouring outside but here's a pic for you in the Garage if you're interested.
No issues clearance wise on or off road, no spacers, 2" Fox Performance lift up front, Fox shocks rear.

Very cool, man! Not my style, but I can dig what you are trying to do.

I'm old too , trucks had 15 inch rims and 2 feet of sidewall rubber to clean , now it's all rim and a strip of tread ... steel wheels were for spares only , bell bottoms and lava lamps...

That's the kind of thing I had in mind. Those baby moons just KILL it for me. Especially if the wheel is chromed or painted a good color. Sometimes the little trim ring can add a nice touch, too. Kinda depends on color scheme, etc. The chrome steelies have a nice look, especially on a sort of utilitarian vehicle like a dune buggy.

Not so fond of the full moons, although they can look good on the right vehicle.
