Hello all. On the road this week for work. ( Up north so hello to all the ?? members!) Anyway, if memory serves the 10 speed trans in the Rangers might have been mentioned here once or twice. Maybe. Well this trip the rental is a new (only had 924 miles when I got in it) Ford Expedition. Put about 100 miles on it today. Due to this forum I paid more attention to the trans than I think I ever have in a vehicle. Based on today with highway and city driving I have to say I think the trans does a nice job. I know... it is not a Ranger. Totally get it. But it is a new Ford and it has a 10 speed. So it speaks to Ford's engineering etc.

With my schedule this week I'll have somewhere around 500 - 600 miles experience in the Expedition by the time I turn it in Friday. And I'll keep paying attention to the trans. But I'm telling you, it did a nice job today.

Edit: Corrected my fat fingered typing thanks to the proof readers on the forum. Nice catch. :like:

This was what really impressed me on my test drive with the Ranger. It really is a nice shifting transmission and even better once you get a tune. It smooths out the lower gears which tend to lug a bit.

tyranny? What the heck are they doing to you up there? I thought they were supposed to be our friendly neighbors up North? Duke, care to comment? ?? ?

I previously had a 2012 Focus with the 6 speed auto. And while it had it bugs as a first year release I thought it was a decent tranny. Then I moved into the ranger, wow, so impressed! BTW, the Focus was sold to a freind and coworker and has yet to compain about the tranny at all. He also still owns a 2005 Focus with auto tranny and a shit ton of miles.

Didn't they have multiple recalls and nearly all of the complaints on the focus were about the DCT?

I got the 5 speed, so no issues from my end (aside from the plastic/aluminum construction radiator expanding at different rates and splitting at 40K miles).

yes, but i got lucky and only had to replace the TCM under warranty. It was far from perfect, but still a far cry from previous trannies IMO.

I think driving style plays heavily into one's satisfaction with this transmission. I'm easy like a Sunday morning and I couldn't tell you how many gears the truck has because I can't feel it shift. I watched the tree once or twice for fun and laugh at how smooth 1-6 is.

I think the issues with the DTC in the US was just driver's expectations. In Europe manuals were the norm prior to DTC as best as I could tell. But in the US, we didn't like the way the DTC felt "disconnected" until we gave it gas to go, or that the shifts were too harsh. We were just so use to the old slush box auto that we expected the same from the DTC. That was most people's complaint. Ford may have had an updated PCM transmission control for "softening" the DTC, but to me, that only would cause other issues in time since that was not how the hardware was designed to be used.

I have heard that, but I think there was something defective, at least the first few years. I had the five speed, so again no problems, but they had multiple recalls, widespread warranty issues, failures. Driver expectation doesn't explain failures or breaking. I say this as someone that was a member on forums at the time, but did not own the DCT (dual clutch transmission, not DTC). It was such a widespread problem it impacted overall perceived reliability, value of the car.

Tyranny didn't bother me. Now if you had used "then" rather than "than", that would have caused me to stop reading right there and then. :)

?I know DCT, but every so often my brain puts DTC, I'm guessing it was another abbreviation I've used over the years so I can't see it's wrong. I hate abbreviations. Haven't worked on a military base in the past. There's just too many of them.

And like I said, the fix to make the car more American auto feeling may have caused the reliability issues. Or the issues of transmission designed for sensible drivers and in testing with European drivers that had no problem with it. But stick Americans in there who want to overload the cars go from 0 to 60 and 2 seconds every time. It just couldn't hold up to that type of driving and those demands. I remember reading about all the issues of the DCT talking with a co-worker of mine at the time with one, he said he had no issues. He was a mild hyper miler type already going for max MPG, but not the zealot type adding aero to the car and such. But riding in his car didn't feel the same as riding in what I believe is the similar model in Europe. It just felt completely different, but it might have been the diesel engine though, but I still figured the DCT should feel more alike.

Now have about 350 miles on the Expedition. IMHO, zero issues with the performance of the trans. I'd give Ford an A+ on this one. Can't wait to drive my Ranger to see how I feel about its performance.

Side note, really like ??. Been coming here a long time. But DAYUM shit can be a bit $$$... gassed the beast up today, $92.84 CAN (About $68.50 ?? and or $5.57 per gallon). Gotta luv it. Not.

When I get home Friday I am going to hug the gas pump at my local station.

Edit: The wonderfully accurate MPG computer says I've averaged 19.78 MPG so far. And that is about 90%+ highway. So reality is... 17 1/2 maybe???? And I drive easy. Especially in ??. Don't think I'd want an Expediton in my driveway.

Yeah, I kinda addressed that already.
