The thing I liked about the 2019 ranger is that they had an option for a higher-trim scab, but they were almost all special orders rather than something you'd ever see at a dealer. Ford gave you the option, but grudgingly. Then, after making sure scabs were mostly unavailable for purchase they complained about the take rate.![]()
The Lariat SuperCab was never offered to the Canadian market. I was surprised when I saw it available in the U.S.In 2019, my scab Lariat had to be brought in from 2 states over. They are relatively rare.
The reality is that crew cab pickups are the new SUVs after SUVs morphed into crossovers. (SUVs were just the new station wagons after the CAFE standards made station wagons extinct 30 years ago) The irony is that crew cabs used to be nearly exclusively work trucks and now they're family haulers and the standard & s/cabs are the work trucks. So it's not a surprise that there's not enough demand to justify the Lariat trim on the s/cabs. A shame, but the reality.
Since it's just the mrs & I, I've really loved the s/cab layout; better use of space and the extra foot pf bed. I guess I'll start hoping that GM gets its act back together, or maybe even consider a RAM. (Ugh, unlikely, but I gotta keep an open mind)
I’m sure sales projections for the Scab were largely driven by industry data on the configuration as well as some internal figures for the F-150. I’m also sure that dealers were reluctant to order any/many because they only really wanted what they knew they could sell quickly.
I agree they have become family haulers, giving dealers another reason to stock Screws. Of course, part of me wonders if the configuration would have had more success if higher Scab inventory was available on dealer lots.
I guess we’ll never know if the sales figures are truly representative of consumer wants/needs or simply a self-fulfilling prophecy driven by dealer concerns.
