Hi there,

New poster here. I am currently car shopping and have an order in for a hybrid Maverick. I realize getting that is a bit of a pipe dream given how oversold the hybrids are for MY23. My current car is a 2006 Escape Hybrid with an HV battery that needs to be replaced to the tune $4k, so I'm hoping it lasts long enough for me to either 1) get a good deal on a ranger or 2) for the Maverick to (maybe) come.

There's a Cactus Gray XLT 301A Ranger that's been on a local dealer's lot for 4 months that I've been keeping an eye on. They finally dropped the $3K ADM and are starting to lower the price a little bit. Right now it's $500 below MSRP ($38,995). Trying not to give away too many details in case the dealers trawl these forums. Here's a portion of the window sticker:

[removed until final sale]

$35k is where I'm comfortable (MAYBE 36k if I really like the truck). I know this is asking for a lot off, but since they've started dropping the price I'm hoping I can get them come down a few thousand more. Given the car market is finally starting to crash and this car has been on their lot for 4 months, and they're making interest payments on it, I think I stand a good chance of at least getting then to come down some.

What do you guys think? Is this a pipe dream for me? I realize I am hoping for a pretty significant price cut, but am also award a serious market adjustment downward for the car market is on the horizon. Certainly open to any other ideas.

Drive in, make your offer and one of three things will happen,

1) you get it at your initial offer
2) you’ll negotiate an acceptable price
3) you drive away in what you drove in

I'm seeing quite a few '23's starting to show up on dealer lots near me, so they'll probably be motivated to move a '22. That being said, I wouldn't say the car market is starting to "crash", so I doubt you'll see it drop too much....maybe $38.5K or $38K. Make an offer (before the end of this month) and go from there.

You’re not going to get it that much below sticker in this market unless they are desperate for year end sales. Frankly, 10% off on a Ranger would be good even in a buyers market, which this ain’t. All you can do is make an offer and see what happens.

Personally, I’d walk in, grab a sales associate, tell them you’re going to make this the easiest sale they’ve ever had and tell them you want “that” truck for X price. They’ll go see the sales manager and come back to say no or let’s get the paperwork going. This has worked for me several times, even once via a 5 minute phone call.

You could try to negotiate a little more out of the trade-in. Go online and get a few quotes and bring the highest with you to have in your back pocket after you see their offer.

Just keep in mind they may not match it exactly because with a trade-in you will pay less in tax on the total bill than if you sold the Escape and brought the cash toward it.

Thanks for your input, everybody. I really appreciate all the thoughts. I'll go in and see how much they're willing to deal. I really don't want to spend over $35K, but I realize this is a huge ask in this current market. I will keep you all posted with how it goes. Have an appointment to test drive it tomorrow morning at 11am.

The market is crazy right now but you have one thing going for you.....it's the end of the year/month. Sometimes they have incentives to move cars for a bonus on units sold, sometimes they have reasons not to carry inventory over. I bought my truck on the 30th of Dec. It was a very different market but I got a deal that I never dreamed I'd get. They had about 10 still in stock (pre pandemic) an wanted them gone. The maverick is more car like an will get WAY better mileage if you value that or cost of ownership is a factor for you.

I'd be surprised to get a whole lot more off because you just don't see rangers on the lots.

$5 says you were the third person that morning and there others interested in it
I called them on the 23rd and said I’m interested in the truck and want to test drive it next Tuesday (ie tomorrow) because I’ve been tied up with family stuff for Christmas. Agreed to 11am with the salesman after I suggested late morning. So maybe there are others, but the trucks been on their lot for 4 months and I set up the date/time.

Man this is so crazy for me to read. The Ranger market is so hot where I live you could probably buy it MSRP there and flip it for a few thousand over here in Vegas lol. There haven't been any here since I bought mine. (I've been looking out of curiosity.)

This is a true story about a real Cactus Gray truck. The dealership I ultimately bought mine from had three tucks come in for customers that backed out (ADM I presume.) Mine, a cactus gray fx4, and a red 4x2.

I saw them come online on a Thursday night. I called and made an appointment to see the cactus gray truck at 8a on Friday. When I got to my appointment at 930 the cactus had SOLD.

And you bet my sorry butt also paid extra ?.

I hope for all of our sakes you end up paying under as much or MORE than I paid over. ($1500)

That’s crazy to hear. They’re not on lots everywhere here but they’re not hard to find. The dealer that has this one has 5 on the lot. One is an fx4 that’s also tempting but I doubt I’d really need that. Thanks for the well wishes!

Up my way they’re not to be found new. A few used that are coming out of leases but that’s about it. I hope you can get the year end discount. If they’re motivated to get it on this years book they’re going to deal if not to low an offer
