I bought the shorty 2 inch antenna in preparation for my new ranger. Picked it up today and it has black shark fin antenna. Is this new or because of XLT with sat radio?

My 21 looked like fin but had a screw in thing for the antenna at the back of it. I didnt see that until I climbed into the bed.

If it’s a new truck, your screw in part of the antenna is probably in your glove box.

If it’s like my 2020 it has a shark fin with an antenna

This. The dealer should have installed it as part of dealer prep. Good help is hard to find these days.
I did have to get a Stubby antenna myself because the OE unit was getting beat up on my garage door

Same, dealer never installed my antenna. Maybe they think it's ugly so left it off? Not a single Ranger at the dealer had an antenna on it. I eventually got the stubby too, for $20 why not.

Is the stubby noticeably different in terms of reception in certain areas? I don't necessarily need the lesser height right now but at some point I'll be getting a bed rack and transporting kayaks, etc. and I could see the stock antenna getting in the way. Would the stubby help with that without having a huge effect on the radio?

Stubby works just as good as the original for me. I only listen to FM in urban areas. Outside of that it is SXM, which comes in great everywhere. (SXM reception is better on my truck than my wife's Subaru, FWIW).

I contemplated getting the stubby, but I actually use it as reference for the height of my truck. The factory antenna is just a bit higher than my rooftop tent, so I know whether I not any entry or exit can damage the tent.

FM is unchanged, AM is a little worse. Mostly I listen to the local AM talk stations on I Heart Radio on my phone through the Ranger’s radio so it doesn’t matter.

You'll lose the HD signal if you're any distance from the source is all. Standard radio is fine and satellite is unchanged.

For me it's either android auto audio sources or XM satellite radio for longer road trips
