Looking for location to pass powerwire through firewall

Been searching through the drivers side and there does not appear to be any good locations to run an 8 gauge power wire through the firewall. My Mustang was super easy. How have most of you done it? Not against drilling, but would prefer not to if possible.

Good luck! Sounds like no matter what, it's a bit of a pain in the arse.

Yep, I had to run 5 wires thru the main harness boot, used a leather Awl to punch the lead wire thru, then pulled the bundle thru, with help from some silicone spray lube, worked fine. I used a long exacto knife to slice a .5" cut in the boot.

By far the easiest pass through is the steering main shaft dust boot.
3 speed nuts, 3 10mil, silicone shaft and lift up boot taking note of markings on rubber parts.
Now you have a large hole and no pain in the arses.

Hi JVM,

There a few threads on this and using the large wiring grommet on the driver's side with a really cool hollow awl tool makes this easy. I do not recommend the steering column boot.

Totally agree. When I was training installers I would always teach them to avoid hot parts, sharp parts, and moving parts.

Those grommet puncture tools are neat. I don’t own one (yet). I always used a piece of aluminum tubing with the same cut on the end. Also have a Klein fish tape I purchased nearly 20 years ago. Pull out 3-ish feet and cut off a section at the grinder.

That's the one I got - works great. I used some wire pull lube from some AC wiring I did. Hardest part is reaching behind the brake master cylinder. And of course the unnatural back twist when working under the dash!
Will be running some more wires this weekend to add adaptive cruise.

Just for future inquiries: I found it easier to use the rubber plug directly under the drivers floor/carpet. Crawl under the truck and you will find the aprox 2" rubber grommit. It comes out easy and allows full access to run wires into the cab. I used a hole punch to make a perfect hole a bit smaller than the harness I pushed through. Works great. Retains water tightness and way easier than that mess on the firewall.

@RangerTX how about a pic. I've looked under mine and pulled up the driver's side carpet. I can't find any grommets at all.

Where does it pop through ? Are you under the carpet when it goes into the cab? How do you route into the cab ?

Yes, under the carpet. Easy to get to. If I recall, just south of were your right foot rests while driving.

If you crawl under the car, you will see it under the drivers floor pan just barely peaking out under a heat shield.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. One question though, Did you ever run into water leaking into the cabin through the hole you cut in the rubber firewall boot.
