My advice: Ask the service manager to drive with you. SHOW him the issue. Don't expect him to go find it. If the mgr says "they are all like this" ask to go drive a like unit. If you are unhappy with both, there is nothing to be done.
I had thought about driving another ranger but wasn't sure they would allow that.

Hi Steve,

This needs to go back to the dealer. This transmission should be silky smooth and your problem indicates something internal is wrong. Hopefully correctable but if not...a replacement transmission would be in order. Does not sound like any forum members can fix it for you. Call Ford Customer Service and request a formal complaint form and number as the dealer can bill against this case number.

Mine is indecisive, also lunges, jerks and hard shifts (similar to thread "Hard shifting and not up shifting right", post #27).
Took it to the dealer and they kept it for the day and said there was no problem as "no error codes and transmission operating within parameters".
Going to escalate it up to Ford Customer Service.
BTW, Google "‘Defective’ 10-Speed Ford F-150 Transmissions Shift ‘Harshly and Erratically,’ Class Action Claims"

Something is definitely not right with that trans. Take it to a different dealer.

At this point that 10R80 trans is pretty proven. It is in a LOT of vehicles, both Ford and GM (since it was a joint venture):

Ford
10R80
General Motors[9]
10L80 MF6
10L90 MGL

The "class action claims" are nothing but a money grab by the lawyers. People who have defective transmissions would get a pittance and the lawyers will get millions.

Honestly, I think these 10 speeds are an engineering marvel. Best auto trans I've ever had in a vehicle, hands down. I hope yours clears itself up over the next couple hundred miles. The only issue I have with mine (which sounds relatively common) is on a cold start up (<40 degrees or so), when pulling out of the driveway, I get ONE rough shift - after that all the shifts are smooth as butter. When it is warmer I don't have that behavior at all.
On my 2019 XLT FX4 with 4000 miles on it, it is not at all "smooth as butter". Rather like the title of this thread.
First time dealer said that computer check and tech drive all is normal. Called Ford and set up a Case. It is now back to the Dealer to check and diagnose with the Ford Tech Hotline. Let's see what they say.

Well, it turned out to be another wasted trip to the Dealer's Service Dept.
Left it overnight so they could drive first thing in the morning.
Master Tech drove it with a computer hooked up and also claims to have the Ford Hotline Tech also online. Long story short "no codes, all per spec".
Only thing they could think of was to clear the "learning" on the transmission and said to let it "gently" let it learn my drive pattern again.
In spite of the "learning" being cleared, transmission is still not smooth (hard shifts, etc).
The only thing "normal" is that it skips gears with normal acceleration (2 to 4 to 6 to 8), which is how the PCM is programmed.
Not happy!

t will do that because it's reset.
think of your computer when you clear all your passwords.
it has to relearn...like go through the motions again
Yes, being an engineer I understand the "relearning" part, but all that does is learn my shift points based on my driving habits.
I'd like to think "relearning" will solve the problem, but the lunging and jerking whenevr it shifts? Not so sure about that.
BTW, my neighbor test drove a brand new one and experienced the same jerking hard shifting issues, and mentioned it to the sales person. Guess what the answer was - "its a learning transmission"

"but all that does is learn my shift points based on my driving habits. "

it learns nothing about you, it adjusts itself to tolerances from manufacturing and wear.

people continually think it connects with us on a spiritual level and it does not.
See in TSB: 19-2052 - 2019 Ranger Note 2 under Service Procedure for Ford's explanation: https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/thre...-runs-rough-rough-shifting-transmission.2135/

Lots more if you Google "What is adaptive learning transmission?"

So for giggles I switched on my terrain management for snow and ice on my way home. It's 100 degrees here today. Aside from the initial take off lag built in to reduce wheel spin the transmission performed 1000 times better than the two wheel drive profile. I tried slow acceleration, fast acceleration and my normal acceleration up to about 60 mph.

I could not believe how smooth the transmission behaved in the snow/ice setting. I mean it makes sense because you want to reduce wheel slippage but if they can make the transmission that smooth for icy conditions why can't they for normal two wheel driving?

The difference was so dramatic I'd swear it was a different truck.

I'm already making plans to pay down my Ranger so that I can sell it before the warranty runs out. I gave the Ranger a second chance after a 1994 lemon but I guess I'll have to buy a manual transmission Taco. ?

I switched into the gravel/snow mode again today and for the first time I actually enjoyed driving my truck.

Going to try that today. How bad did your gas mileage suffer?

I didn't drive it all that far so can't really say.
