Sorry I missed that! I've been reading so many threads from so many sources lately that it's hard to keep track.

No worries - there are a lot of threads - sometimes it is hard to find what you are looking for. The original posting was earlier in this thread.

Hi Rob,

I tried the trickle charger route but the vehicle shut down after about 20 minutes for some reason, so tried the idle method... Probably drop the vehicle off to the dealer when the taillight recall notice says parts are available...Alleged to be January....Well..Now Feb and no letter as of yet from Ford... Seems to be more of this snail pace repair parts stocking issue with which many folks here have had to deal....

Just out of curiosity which trickle charger did you use?

Hi Rob,

I just repeated the whole unload files process and plugged in the map update..My system said Navigation Error. I let the vehicle run for two hours before I got installation complete.... Map function has returned and no Nav errors....So I checked and the install was map version NA1.17. The Ford Customer Service Rep said the new version was NA1.18... Either Ford programed my stick wrong or the Customer Service rep was wrong on the version for Ranger.... I am baffled by this... Could you check your version? Settings>General>About Sync> scroll down to map version...

I am so fed up with Sync 3.3 and have burned up a quarter tank of gasoline battling this map up date.

Thanks!

It's been reported by U of M that version 3.3 has a bug which does not show the map update. You very likely have 1.18 but will need Sync 3.4 to confirm (My update did not have issues and my Sync 3.3 also shows version 1.17 but I'm confident I loaded 1.18. Guess we'll find out when we waste more gas loading Sync 3.4

Hi Phil,
I looked into the Battery Tender Plus and found this in the user manual:
The two-colored status indicator lights are available to determine whether the charger is operating in one of the 3 primary charge modes: the bulk mode (full charge, constant current, battery is 0% to 85% charged), the absorption mode (high constant voltage, battery is 85% to 100% charged), or the storage/float maintenance mode (low constant voltage, battery is 100% to 103% charged).
If your charger was in storage/maintenance mode (and with young healthy battery it should be) that is likely why your Ranger shut down after 20 minutes. Under this condition the battery voltage does not get high enough to allow the vehicle to 'think' it is running. OTOH, a trickle charger outputs a higher voltage which may then 'trick' the vehicle into 'thinking' it is running.

I have a similar charger and was concerned that trick would not work for the full 90 minutes of map installation. I'm planning on trying a true trickle charger when I load Sync 3.4 and I have confidence that will work.

Yes, Phil - when I was on 3.3, after I did the map update it still showed 1.17. After upgrading to 3.4 it now shows 1.18. I think you got upgraded (finally!). Glad it worked, but you are right, it shouldn't be this hard.....

Hi Rob,

There are places in Ford that are so resistant to change...IT was one of them...need to break the log jamb...A completely new start of the art architecture, maybe google based is need in my opinion. We have patched Sync for too long...this anality to keep the code secrete and paired with your vehicle as my $40 memory stick was is just way more than is needed in these days...make it open source. I will wait for 3.4 to be released to Ranger and may elect to forgo the update as I rarely use it on my Lincoln and have really never used it on my Ranger.

I wanted to try this to see how it would go and to experience Ford Customer Service... What a f*cked up experience. For customers, I am appalled by the experience...Incompetence at the forefront. Clearly the call center is in the Philippines or some other Asian area. Their names were Kim, Joan etc and likely not their real names...I have severe difficulty with accents...I never talked to a Sync specialist...I dealt solely by email. Just flat awful. I suspect this was setup by Michael Dell as we are so entrenched with Dell.... JMO!

Anyway...Ford and Samsung Appliances are on par with each other and are about the level of Whale Shit!

You don't know how many times I've heard senior managers say "Our business is not IT" - and for many companies that is a true statement, but very few things in most companies any longer can be done WITHOUT IT. For banks and insurance companies, IT is CENTRAL to EVERYTHING they do. But some managers just don't get it. The auto industry is having a very similar experience I think. Software is becoming so important to vehicles - it needs to become a core competency for any company that wants to compete in the future. I hope Ford either develops that competency or buys someone that has it.

Don't get me started on "support". Most of it is total garbage these days. People reading from scripts who have zero idea of what they are doing.

Wow, I sound like a grumpy old man..... "Get off my lawn"!!!

As a 15 year tech and tech support veteran, I agree with you. Technical debt is high and many people are going to suffer because of it.

I've been doing this gig for 30 years now - hard to believe. It seems like the only thing that matters these days is what it looks like (it has to be "pretty") and that you have to constantly add new "features". I tell people it doesn't make any difference what it looks like if it doesn't work, but that argument seems to fall on deaf ears....

There are days I'm amazed that anything works to be honest....
