It has happened to me! (Dreaded Fan Sensor - Crumbling Hose!)

Interesting, whatever is used might have to be stout, would it have to be something strong enough to secure the fan?

What is the failure mode?

Fan locks up and rips everything out?

Or is it simpler than that, the hose fails and things start to gently rotate?

I'm pondering this Ford debacle and I think I have a moderate safety solution that might work if you're willing to put new clamps on the hose.

Thinking about popping my clamps off and running a length of braid over the pipe, like this:

Re-clamp it and the braid should keep tension on the assembly if the hose crumbles. I'm going to look for a good high temp braid though and not the cheap nylon stuff.

That's pretty good methinks ? , there is a metal version of that braid also , if it will make the bend , or maybe some of the high voltage heat shrink , that stuff is damn strong...

Maybe you can design one based on the F150 design. Wires run through it.

That is going to be much harder to do. The clutch end is a solid stud as well and is (I suspect) integrated into the unit. . It would be simpler to start with an F150 clutch and modify the engine mount side.

The F150 design is a cleaner look, but functionally the same. I think the key is the design of the solid studs.

Disclaimer - But I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Ah yes, the mount itself would have to change to route the wires inside.

OK, I took my new hose off the stud and snapped a picture. I think that sharp ridge combined with a cheap hose is our issue. I think the silicone hose that I used will last, and most likely reinforced fuel line. But not a vacuum hose like the one that come from the factory.

Again, I could very well be wrong here.

That fits with my experience as the hose on mine fell apart right on that ridge when I just touched it. The other side seemed fine to me. And, the rest of the hose, while still cheap, seemed fine when I just clamped the shortened hose back on for the trip to and from work the following day. I do think a more rounded flare and a reenforced hose would go a long way to preventing the failure.

I also wonder, as postulated here by others, if the failure is the hose breaks, it's not noticed and the sensor just freely moves around until the fan or clutch is able to catch the wire and rip it apart.

Wondering also if you could just chamfer/ round the edges of the “T” and replace hose with HD/silcone ?

I agree, the sharp edges are bad, not like it sees a lot of pulling stress. Also going to silicone probably will help life, as that little bracket gets quite hot, being bolted to the engine block.

Maybe instead of an "indestructible hose" , we need an "easily destructable" harness ? Someway it will unplug when it gets yanked on hard enough , bullet connectors or something of the sort...

They would need to be at the motor end of the harness, instead of the module, where the connector is now. It seems the the "motor" end, is where the hose breaks.
