Issue with CarPlay and Sound Settings

zaashf

Hello friends,

An issue has recently arisen that has ruined the enjoyment of listening to music in my Ranger. I began noticing about two weeks ago that the sound was tinny and I was not getting the full dynamic range. So I went to the sound settings and noticed that my Fade was set all the way forward. Also no matter what I changed the Treble, Mids, and Bass to they would keep defaulting to the center. I did a differential diagnosis and it seems that the fade/balance and adjustments stay what I set them to when I am connected to Sync via bluetooth or while listening to radio.

So seems like there's something wrong with Carplay? But what I don't get is how my iPhone can affect the sound settings of the Sync sound. CarPlay should have no ability to alter those settings? Maybe something with a recent iOS update messed it up? I tried disabling and re-enabling CarPlay as well as doing a master reset. Was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this issue.

Not sure about CarPlay but most Android Auto problems can be fixed by a better/replacement cable.

Might be something cheap/easy to try.

I use CarPlay and am not having that issue. My phone is on version 14.4.2.

I tried using a couple different cables yesterday and the sound settings were still messed up. So I gave up and tried again today. But today there’s no connection at all lol. Previously it was hit or miss to get CarPlay to initiate. I think there’s something wrong with the USB module because neither ports will power or connect to Sync at all now. But the trim lighting is working fine. Anyone know if replacing the module would be covered under the B-to-B warranty? Or should I just do it myself?

The module would be covered under warranty. But I would try a couple of things. First try rebooting sync by holding in the power button and the next track button simultaneously for 5-10 seconds. If that doesn’t work, I would disconnect the battery for a few minutes and it will do a complete hardware reboot. Be sure to review the owner’s manual for disconnecting/replacing the battery so you know what to expect (such as having to reset the auto down/up on the driver window, etc.).

Also reboot your phone if you haven’t already done so.

I figured it out! The reason the sound was localizing to the front (fade all the way forward and equalizer set to default) is because that is how Sync adjusts the sound settings for voice calls. Confirmed this when I was adjusting volume and saw that the dial said “Voice Volume” instead of “Audio Volume.” For some reason CarPlay is telling Sync that Spotify’s audio output is a call. I switched to Apple Music and the sound settings went back to my custom settings and no issues with the fade/balance. So now I guess I have to wait for a CarPlay or Spotify update. Whichever is leading to the erroneous output type.
