Seems most posts if not all about transmission work issues or failure relate to Ford dealership.
Is this because of warranty or because no one else can work on the Transmission in the Ranger
except the dealer.

Over the years I think I've always gone to a transmission shop for any
transmission issues. It's all they do and you would figure if you are out beyond warranty and need to fix or service the trans that any reputable Transmission shop could work on the Ranger transmission.

Having said that it appears that everything has gotten so complicated when it comes to anything
on a car/truck that even the dealers are scratching their heads.

Mine was a dealer job because it was a TSB and covered at no charge.

Likely because most trucks are just now starting to fall out of warranty and fail. It usually takes the aftermarket builders a little time to get up to speed and familiar with the units. As time goes on, more and more shops will be working on 10R/10L transmissions.

The 10R80 is becoming a legend, good or bad. I assume reputable non-Ford trans shops are or will be getting good at working on them. Heck, there are already online places to buy custom units that have addressed all the common problems, and you can even get beefed up units for a premium.

Where have you found beefed up units? I've looked some and only come up with rebuild kids.

pretty sure it's because most folks have been getting them dealt with under warranty coverage and TSB stuff so far. My OEM warranty holds up until next month on time. I won't be at 60k by then. After that, my 3rd party extended warranty takes over and I suppose I don't necessarily have to have warranty work done at the dealer.

Dealer if it's under warranty, transmission specialist if not.

10R80 transmissions have been out since 2017. Aftermarket vendors have had plenty of time to learn and improve on it.

if you're paying for it, you can have anyone do the job. If you want the dealer to cover it (warranty, TSB, etc), then you're going to have to convince him it's a job which should be covered, which is the hard part in most of these cases

I just had work done by B&J Transmission in San Jose, CA. They were able to pull up my truck info no problem, and had the special gear to work on the Ranger transmission. So, short answer, yes, they can, but you'll need to shop around to make sure first.
