I guess perhaps I am partially misunderstood with my post. Let me attempt to clarify...

I am sure the Ranger engine and drivetrain are, as a rule, robust enough to handle that amount of speed for extended periods of time (but as any reader of this forum can easily tell, there will be the exceptions to that statement).

I personally would fear traveling in my Ranger at those speeds for any particular amount of time because while my truck will certainly DO it, it wasn't engineered and built for that particular type of use, as I understand things, and as many readers/contributors here have astutely pointed out, it is a truck and is best suited to do truck stuff. I would feel unsafe in traffic ( or out of it) at those high speeds.
Agree 100%. It's a truck, if you want to go "fast" get a Mustang....
100-110 mph is not "fast".....pretty much any current midsize car can top that. My wife's Subi Outback can top that without even breathing hard, and handle better. But so what ???
Just don't understand what someone is trying to prove by running that high in a truck.
The retired cop (from Florida) in me would say....
"Oh Boy, 3-4 tickets including a reckless driving charge, an arrest, and a vehicle tow that will cost around $200.00, plus bail, hiring an attorney, a gazillion points on your license, and double rates on your insurance !!!! "

I get it, totally valid to feel that way about traveling I high speed. I maintain that driving that fast for any period of time will not hurt the engine or transmission, but will certainly affect your ability to respond to traffic or obstructions in the road. The tires themselves are actually the weakest link, mechanically speaking.

That being said, the truck is relatively slow so I don't see the point of blasting down the highway above 80. Shit I even stay below 100 in my mustang! Third gear absolutely pulls at highway speed, but there's not much point in going faster than 90. Not trying to catch a felony just to put triple digits on the speedo.

Hell, I did 90 all day with a fully loaded truck and trailer and ended up dicing through south Florida traffic just to not get run over doing 90! The truck handled it like a champ!

Actually, I was pretty impressed with the quality of the trailer. It was in much nicer shape than previous Uhaul equipment I've rented, and the tires were in great shape!

Heck a lot of states have 80 mph posted limits with some at 85 mph. As we all know that’s just a guideline for most who push 5-10 mph above until they see the constabulary. My truck feels right at home doing 80-85 mph on cruise control. There are some that just aren’t comfortable at those speeds driving or even riding like my wife.

Let's wait till the OP posts more about the problem....he stated he replaced the pan a few months ago. With what, by who, why....maybe not the trannie's fault at all.....
with these trannys that are electronic it could even be a wiring issue or Brain fart

Just be aware, the highest speed rating for a trailer tire is "L" which is 75 mph, no matter if the tire is brand new.
Best trailer tires out now are the Goodyear Endurance, and their top rating is "L".
And, I seriously doubt U-Haul puts top of the line tires on their rentals....most likely they use "China Bombs"

I almost had a DUI hit me head on, at about 80mph, going the wrong way on a divided highway on my way home from work

AFTER I arrested a guy for doing the same thing at work that evening

I think I'll just hide under my bed and clutch my wife's purse for the rest of my life!

Nah!

ETA - if it's not obvious I like to kid around, humor is a pretty necessary evil in my line of work.

At the end of the day, we're all adults, we all have different lives and life experiences that shape our decisions. Let's just leave it at that. When we start with the 'what are the vehicles built for' and the philosophical questions about whether 65 is reasonable and 80 is maniacal it just reminds me of the George Carlin bit

My old 94 when I first got it,with a A4LD tranny did that a couple times on steep grades when I forgot to take it out of OD. Puked out all the fluid. I let it cool down and filled it up and off I went.Maybe switch to manual on the grades and taking it to a lower gear will solve your problem in the future.

However that doesn't explain the gear change.
Sure it can. Foamy, overheated transmission fluid makes a TERRIBLE hydraulic fluid, and when it gets pumped through the valvebody all sorts of weirdness can happen.

remove the speed limiter then. Weirdness goes away. I never have one. Removed them all just in case.
Serious question, what is the limit? I've hit 113mph (just once, clam down everybody) and it it never did anything. I slowed down on my own cause that driveshaft was getting whirly.
