Help. Tailgate damage

Deleted member 1634

Don't feel bad - the one and only dent on my truck (I have quite a few chips, but only one dent) was done by me.

What is the saying? Something like "Good judgement comes from exercising bad judgement" - or something like that. I can relate fully to that statement.
Best way to learn is to make mistakes. And boy have I learned a lot. haha

All the dents, scratches, and chips on mine are from me too. And I'm perfectly okay with that. haha

Well. I'm a dumb ass. I hooked up the trailer but didn't cinch down the lock. Then I drove my golf cart up on the tailgate of the trailer. It popped up and went forward into the latch cup. The good news, I did it. The truck has 2200 miles and I'm sick.
Don't feel bad... I don't think there's a person out there who hasn't done something that they couldn't immediately say "Well that was fricken dumb, why the hell did just do that?" afterwards...

I know I have said that on more occasions than I'd care to remember honestly.

Hi PH,

Always happens to me when I say "Here...hold my beer and watch this..." dumb, dumb, dumb because when I return my beer is empty and I have to go get another one.... lesson learned...finish the beer first!

I "accidentally" drove over my tailgate in the yard one time on my old Ranger. I say accidentally, who would do that on purpose? I had taken it off to shovel mulch and "forgot" it was laying in the grass. I say forgot, who wouldn't remember where they put their tailgate? Lucky for me, a trip to the U-Pull_It yard found a perfect tailgate and it was even white, so for cheap, I had it fixed and people were "none-the-wiser". I say "none-the-wiser", who couldn't be smarter than me!

I would just throw some KN Weld into the cracks and then cover it with the piece you bought. Nothing structural there and you just k is something else is going to happen to the tailgate anyway.

I've done it twice, under two different situations.

1st was Uhaul hooked up a trailer to my roommates new Chevy Avalanche for me. I had no clue about trailering or double checking their work. When I went to load my new-to-me 1968 F100 shortbed pickup on the trailer, the trailer broke loose and speared my roommates new truck. Luckily I paid for the insurance through Uhaul and they handled it very nicely.

The second time I was toting a trailer for work on one of my bosses (law enforcement command) back-up vehicles, a Ford Expedition. Someone stepped up into the trailer as I was rolling forward slowly and it broke loose and speared the tailgate of that thing. Ughhhhh.

Now I trailer for work and pleasure (boating) often and I'm much better about it. :D

As for your tailgate, I'm sorry! That sucks sooooo bad!!!! I hope you're able to get it fixed to your liking.

Just be glad nobody else got hurt. Trailers.... Dangerous Trailers....

Yeah! That reminds me! We had a Sherwin Williams tractor trailer truck loose it's trailer on one of our high speed, curvy roads in our county and I was a responding supervisor. The landing gear on the trailer punctured the floor of the trailer and thousands of gallons of broken 1 and 5 gallon paint cans leaked out through the floor. While waiting for Motor Vehicle Compliance to arrive on scene to take it over from us, I was in wonder and awe that it went right, and not left into on-coming traffic!!!

My dad had something similar happen to him, or rather to his wife with his truck. She was taking his truck to help move her son out of college at the beginning of all this a few months back. The U-Haul guys hooked up the trailer to his 2017 F-150 (reg cab, reg box), she didn't know any better to check. Heck I probably wouldn't have even checked to think of it. She made it quite a ways before hitting a bump on the highway. The trailer came off the ball, slammed into the license plate and the bumper, then came down to rest on the safety chains. Luckily the trailer was empty and still light enough to not throw the truck around. Especially with how light a truck like his is. Scary stuff. He ended up just bending the bumper back for the most part himself. And U-haul had that use of the trailer be free.

Ugh! You had to remind me. I didn't get to tow my new-to-me truck home, and I still had to eat the trailer rental. I felt horrible it messed up my roommate's new Avalanche and I was thrilled they covered the repairs and a rental through the added insurance.

I did a dumb thing yesterday. I backed out of the garage in my '15 Escape (only 22k on the odometer), just as I have a million times, and was startled by a "bang" that came from the passenger side. I looked over to see that the mirror was folded towards the front of the vehicle. When I got to the mirror I realized that I apparently had gotten too far to the right and had hit the mirror on the wall on that side of the garage door. The glass is shattered and loose, a piece is missing from the surround and the mirror body is cracked. At first I couldn't find the color matched hood, it had popped off and was on the floor of the garage, but is in perfect condition. Because the mirror is heated, has the turn signal and the blind spot monitor, it is a $300 mirror. On the bright side, I won't have to have the new one painted to match. Yea me!

Think of the good side if you cant open your tailgate you wont have to buy a damper. It is a truck, war wounds on the tailgate are a badge of honor. If you want to open the tailgate again you need to jerry rig a wire connection to the latch. Put some duct tape on the wire sos you dont hurt your hand. ?
