I don't think that you can add a USB C hub if the APIM doesn't support it. I would stick to a USB A port if you are replacing the hub.
FWIW their is a guy on YT with a 2018 F150 that made the swap. He had to upgrade SYNC to 3.4 from 3.0 for it to work. I have 3.4.

I have no idea how to read post number 20.

Explain it like I am five please.

What parts do you suggest I buy? What does newer hubs mean? Did Ford revise the part with the same part number but different dimensions?
C2909A - APIM to USB HUB - The APIM provides the Power & Ground for the HUB, so by your issues - this tells me that the RH Port has a more direct feed back to the APIM and the LH Port is a (Rider) of the RH Port.
Have you ever used a - Powered Hub for your computer, plugged into a wall outlet and then connected multiple USB Devices to it - That's what the Power & Ground Provides, a way to power 2 each port's and provide (Illuminated Ports)

There is not enough power (In the hub) to power 2ea connections and the (Illumination for the Ports)

You have a (Single) USB Cable - feeding the HUB from the APIM, that USB cable provides a separate charge and data transfer - the same as any modern USB cable, just like when you physically connect the phone to a computer or the truck.

As far as the (HUB) Ford has various HUB's available that offer varied (Ports) with the newest technology of USB-C they have (on the market) duel port USB (one with the same USB port you have and then a (USB-C).
The challange is locating the (exact part number) that will phyicially fit into the panel without modifications and also (wire match) the C2909A Connector.

Try the search function - as I recall another member swapping the HUB with one that included the new standard (USB-C)
or just replace it with the OEM Hub you have installed.
The only way to verify it's the Hub is to perform a wiring check for voltage.

Its most likely the HUB

Okay, it's been almost a month since I updated my results. The cable had fixed mine. New amp is in and all is well. Hope this helps someone down the road.

UPDATE-

I found a solution that, so far, is working. In addition to the CarPlay disconnects a new problem seemingly started after the latest ios update. The Ranger screen would freeze in CarPlay. No buttons would work but Apple Music would continue to run and there was no way out of this except disconnect the phone.

I bought these adaptors and I am using the Apple C to C cable and both these problems are resolved.

Fingers crossed.

I had the Android Auto issue come up after the first of the year or sometime in December. Bluetooth works, but the android auto, etc. does not. I have power to the USB, still charges the phone. I've read this thread multiple times and a few others. I've done most of what has been suggested before taking something apart...disconnect batter, get better usb/phone cable, do a reset.

It seems like my next option would be to check/replace the USB hub, then after that would be to check/replace the cable to the APIM...if I don't want to pay the dealer?

Well, after going through it all. The cable from the usb hub to the apim was the problem child. It's half the price off the hub. I would try that first. I tried the hub first with no joy, so tried cable next and that was the fix. Good luck!

I also wanted to update this thread that the cable was the fix. Almost 4 months now and playing as normal.

"Thank you"? Kind of what I was afraid of. Seems like a pretty involved process, and I'm guessing a dealer charges a pretty high price for it!

I bought the cable online, close to $40 shipped if I remember right. And if you purchase any upgrades for your truck from crutchfeld they will email instructions on how to take the dash apart. And they are detailed.

Those are the ones. They are great worth the money. They give them to you free if you purchase any audio equip for you truck. And the only thing original in mine is the speaker wiring.

I saw the $10 instructions after SS posted, and I figured that would be a worthwhile price. Thanks for the recent posts and feedback.
