It's been the same procedure in all other vehicles in the last almost 10 years I've owned that has had a keyless start. Subaru Foresters (2 of them), Ford (Explorer and now Ranger) You need to have the fob with you and press on the brake and then the keyless start button to be able to drive.
So how does it work with an ignition that needs a key? You have to put the key in the ignition and turn forward two clicks?

That's it. Now you can go out today and get yourself a smartphone and a remote start!

I'm not sure, my first experience was with keyless & remote start combined. I never had it w/ a key. Back then I'd just start my pickup and lock the doors and have a spare key on my key ring to open the door back up when went out after it was warmed up.

Why?

If I need a phone, I have one. It's a flip phone or a land line at home.

If I need a computer, I have one... at home.

I live within my means. I plan if I am going somewhere and take a map with me....

And I sure as hell don't have Alexa sitting on the shelf, keeping track of what I say, do, buy, etc.
I was like you until my kids bought me a smart phone. I was not going to buy one for myself. Now, I really like the navigation capability the phone gives me.

I was playing with the app one day. Opened the truck window and then locked it with the key thing. Then reached through the window and opened the door. The truck send a text to my phone saying there was an unauthorized entry.

Yep, that's part of the alarm system. I did that, and didn't react quickly, then the horn went off.

I had to pay $15/month in my Jeep for the equivalent of Ford Pass. The nice thing was talk to text which the Ranger doesn't have...?
Sure it does. You don't use CarPlay? I'm assuming Android Auto does the same thing too.

Plug into USB and you can use voice to test using android auto, I cannot speak for iphone.
After seeing your post I tried it today. I plugged into the USB it goes to Carplay which activates Siri on the iPhone and you can voice to text. Basically all voice commands you can do with your iPhone are now active through Carplay. I've had my Ranger for 2.5 months and I'm finally getting to play around with all the features now that we're on vacation and it's cooler out.

Yep the voice command button becomes Siri. Sometimes when I’m driving and bored I ask her questions and ask her to tell me a joke. Quite often they are pretty lame but there’s the odd good one. Ask her what is 0 divided by 0 is sometime! Lol

I'll do that sitting around bored at times just asking her stupid stuff. We were sitting around one night having a few beers and I asked her a pretty nasty question and she said "That's not nice David"....lol
Somewhere there's someone listening to these laughing their ass off.

I am guessing Ford pass is pretty much the same thing I have on my Colorado (My Chevrolet)?
I can remote start my truck with the phone, lock doors etc.. I have it set to turn on my seat warmers with remote start.
You can not drive the truck even though it is running.. You have to insert the key.
The Colorado does have speech to text built in, you do not need android.. It has tons of apps from weather, order food apps, even Amazon can deliver packages to the truck. It is really cool... It emailed me when I had a leak in the tire. It will set up oil changes for me etc.
The system will email me all kinds of info on the truck and my driving once a month. You do not need Android auto for any of it.

Only issue is I love android auto and it is completely buggy with it.. Ticks me off...
The normal info system works great though and does so much stuff, way more than android auto. I do not think it is android auto but the trucks system. It was pretty early on and one of the first trucks to have all this stuff so that is probably why..

How is the WiFi for the Ranger? I know they have it. I believe it is through AT&T like the Colorado?
I purchased it and for my Colorado and love it... My wife and grandkids can stream off it and it is fast and way more reliable than the phone internet especially in iffy places? This is something I would hate to loose if I buy the Ranger..

I am reading you can remote start with the app on the Ranger but I am guessing you need to have the option added for remote start on the truck first.

Do you need sync 3 for this? I kind of want Sync 3 anyway.
Is it easy to use?
Does it work well?
How does android auto work?
Kind of one of the important things for me and one of the things i would miss trading in my Colorado on a Ranger. Remote start is important here because it is so cold.

I have the base Sync in my XL/STX Ranger. you don't need the "Remote Start" kit for the truck, unless you want to use the key fob to start the truck.

1- Easy to use, down load the app, register your truck and then the app take cares the rest.
2- It has worked for me. Remote lock/unlock, and other info is shown on the app.
3- I don't have that package.

So you do not need remote start on the truck to use the app to start it the truck remotely.

I would have thought you would.

Thanks for the info?

The info system is pretty important to me I drive allot long distances. One reason I did not buy the Taco before.

That's correct, I don't have a remote start key fob, just the app, and on my window sticker, it not listing the "extra" cost of remote start kit/key fob.

I'll second that, with the APP you do not need the remote start "package" that is a standalone feature if you want it, and plan not to use the APP.

I had the 2018 TACO, and other than the weather and my NAV it did not do much. After buying it a month or so later they removed a lot of the built in APPS, like Pandora via a mandatory download on the unit.

I much prefer the SYNC3 and like that I can use Car Play with Waze for NAV on the head unit. Toyota rolled Android/Apple Car functionality out for the Camry I think, still not in the TACO today.

I ended up buying the Ranger in Lariat trim. After looking at an XLT, and a XL with Sport and FX4 packages installed no Satellite radio option. I felt the Lariat gave me a lot more of what I wanted. Like all LED headlights/day time running lights, fog lights and heated power folding mirrors with intergrade turn signal, and security approach lamps, leather heated seats and a lot more.
