Just passed the 1000 mile “brake in” of taking it easy and celebrated by pulling out onto a back road and stomping on it. I am really surprised just how much power the 2.3 will kick out it’s incredibly impressive for a 4 banger.

I find it funny on the bronco forums with folks worried that it will be sluggish. I feel like the bronco with the 2.3 and manual trans could be a lot of fun. On the other hand I’m thinking the 2.7 is going to be downright fast.

You didn't stomp it to pass anyone during that 1,000 miles?

In one of the Ranger FB groups someone posted their timeslip from a dragstrip. Stock Ranger did the quarter in 14.8. I'm old and remember things and that's about what a stock 1969 GTO would do.

why did you wait?
they expressly tell you to vary your speed and change through the gears
forget about the "labor the engine" concept, you're not having a baby.
drive it like you stole it

That basically just means drive normally. The manual recommendation perfectly describes my commute. You wouldn’t want to set the cruise control and hold 2500rpm all the time. Putting it in sport mode and stomping it to 5k+ RPM probably counts as laboring it...

The don’t labor it concept comes from the fear of micro welding the rings during break in. Most modern engines don’t require a traditional break in due to improved tolerances in manufacturing. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s wise to “drive it like you stole it” right away as the manual states so specifically. It’s an age old argument of engine builders though so you do you. I lean towards a controlled break in while stressing the engine just enough for proper ring expansion and mating.

Didn’t need to take the truck above 4000 rpm to pass anyone even at high speed. I drive in the left lane on my commute and easily pass anyone who needs passing. So I guess it depends on your definition of stomping it. I definitely drove it hard enough during break in but didn’t run around in sport mode putting the gas pedal to the floor.

I've always heard to break them in like you drive them. Give the brakes an tires a chance to wear a little. I hammered it a few times after about a week of easy commuting. I generally drive easy around town, 5-10 mph over on the highway an hammer it to pass the idiots.

In the movie Ford vs Ferrari, Christain Bale's character said something about a race car doing 1/4 in 13.4. I looked at my GF and said "Maddy Red can do that" Engines have come a long way

Hmmmm, if only there was a member who could tell us the exact time for a 1969 GTO in the 1/4. ?

Actually, if you do a Ford tune, a CAI, a decent CAT back exhaust, and aftermarket cooler pipes, you can break into the high 13s, with speeds hovering around 105 ish. Not bad for a two-ton+ truck!

By the way, the aforementioned GTO Judge was far from "stock". The time listed before that post, was very close to what Car & Driver reported at the time.

People like to lament and go down the nostalgic rabbit hole, especially the older crowd, but the truth of the matter modern mini-vans would probably smoke the old hot rods people often spend big bucks to build and restore.

They love to rebuild them big and loud - however by todays standards its a whole lot of noise to go no where fast. Doing burn-outs in the Home Depot parking lot still impresses small children and boomers though.

I eagerly await the "but mini-vans don't drop panties" defense to come along now.

A GTO equipped as most of them were with the standard non-Ram Air 400, automatic, and street tires, was a high-14 second car.
