Hi Wil,

wannna bet? I, at the time, launched the largest Flex Fuel vehicle production with the 3.0L Ranger in 1999. Every 3.0L Ranger was able to run everything from E0 through E85. When on E85, you could watch your fuel gauge drop like an anvil off a building. Air/fuel ratio for gasoline is 14:1, E85 is 8:1. Engines ran fine. I hated this program but the Federal Government gave fuel economy credits for flex fuel and we, Ford, played the game. About 135,000 vehicles a year for the Flex Fuel Ranger....
See a older Ranger with a Road & Leaf badge under the tailgate Ford Oval....it is a flex fuel vehicle.
Best,
Phil
I had the Mazda B3000 version, Model Year 2000, and it was a Flex Fuel vehicle. Somewhere along the way, it lost the leaf badge, but it had the sensor under the frame rail.

None, plus E15 creates extra smog. How stupid is that?
Kinda funny how we make millions of gallons of ethanol in distilleries running at least partially on coal-fired electric power in order to create less pollutants. And how many gallons of diesel are used to plant, harvest and transport the corn to the plant?

Not funny, stupid. It's all political. The amount of fossil fuel required to make windmill blades, just to chop them up and bury them when the lifespan is up. Stupid!

Ethanol can't be transported via pipelines either because they attract moisture so it has to be trucked everywhere by diesel burning rigs.

Hi Dave,

Mazda did not want the Road and Leaf badge for some reason. Mazda was not easy which to work on anything...Very inflexible on their beliefs....Glad we sold them off....PITA. Eddie M was their plant liaison...Piece of work for sure... a true Pretty Boy....

Best,
Phil

Probably some type of cultural friction. I spent several years in Japan, and their business culture is ... different ... They were probably mad you guys didn't buy a rotary version from them... That would have been cool. But they had tip seal problems with that motor that never did get solved. Great for racing, but not good for daily drivers.

Wow, and here I thought Mazda was just carbon copies of Ford just re-badged.

Hi James,

For the most part it was a rebadge with different grill, interior etc. They always had some idea to keep up the differentiation, some of which sucked and I refused to even consider. Leather seating idea turned into a disaster for them...I let this one go and all I did was throw them a towel to wipe the egg off their face for the shabby interior apperance. They would not listen to the supplier that they had to change seat construction to do leather... Anyway...all water under the bridge now... Mazda got the same chassis, and powertrain and much of the body same as Ford...

Best,
Phil

no thanks
I had a 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid and it was supposed to get 44 MGP. I was using regular ethanol gas and only getting 36 MPG. I changed to Non Ethanol gas and it was getting 42+ MPG. I also have rode motorcycles most of my life and will not use any ethanol gas if possible due to what it does to any thing with a carburetor. I have a friend that works from home on motorcycles and he told me a long time ago ethanol is bad for the seals and gaskets in carburetors. It made him a ton of money fixing all the older motorcycles carburetors. The same with lawn mowers and blowers and edger's. No Ethanol. A question does anyone use non ethanol gas in there Ranger? I know it's about a $1.00 more a gallon. I use premium only. This is a good thread. Lots if view points. The main thing is Ethanol is not what our government says it is cracked up to be.

around these parts, the only no e gas is 92 premium… sounds great right?

not so much when it melts and drops your valve seat in your lawn mower engine.

still waiting nearly a year to get a part to fix my B&S on my snapper. my small engine guy says 87 only… that leaves e 10 and startron, lucas, whatever stabilizer you pray to

I was planning on making a tune or two for E30-E50 already. :) I am a fan of ethanol and have been running it for over a decade in toy cars, race cars, SxS', and even used it to lean out air:fuel mixtures on my carbureted machines, here at 8k ft above sea level. I've never had an issue with ethanol, even letting it sit for long periods. If I know a vehicle will be sitting, I will use some Sea Foam and a little bit of 2-stroke oil mixed in. By sitting by a long time, I mean 6 months to a year.

Switch grass is a much better plant to make ethanol from.

We may disagree on oil change intervals or types of oil etc.
I'm sure you have arrived at your conclusions after careful consideration.

So have I.

I am reluctant to discuss this further since giving a simplistic answer would likely send me down a rabbit hole of trying to justify my position. I'm not really up for that, nor do I expect you to spend a thousand words trying to convince me.

But I'll say too much anyway...
The question really is a matter of degree... At 10% we have been able to compensate significantly for the presence of alcohol. As the percentage goes up, so does the difficulty. So much so that in places where pure alcohol is used for passenger car fuel, engine longevity has shown to be reduced by as much as 55%. Now whether engine wear would increase significantly to go from 10% to 15% ethanol would depend pretty much on your definition of "significant".

Analogy...

Suffice it to say that the additional wear from fuel containing ethanol over pure gasoline is clearly and significantly greater than that of using a good parasynthetic over a pure synthetic motor oil.
? (perhaps debatable):like:

Using pure ethanol would then be more analogous to using a nondetergent straight weight motor oil instead of a modern pure synthetic.

That is the most conciliatory position I am willing to express:handshake:.

I run E85 in nearly anything I have with power and have never had an issue with additional wear... in fact, my last sample was slightly worse on gas than it was on the previous samples on E85.

Been pumping exclusively E15 in the Carolinas for two years. No problems. You boomers are quite the sensitive bunch! ❄
Careful... you thinking that so called "Boomers" are Luddites is bound to come back to haunt you in a few years! ;)

Maybe they could make surf boards and frisbees out of them...
