OK, I'm going for the dumbest question of all time on the Ranger5G website...

Here it is: I have a 4x4 FX4... when in 2 wheel drive mode, is it front wheel drive or rear wheel drive???

I have Google searched The Question to no avail.. at least no explicate statements says, "Yes, it is rear (or front) wheel drive in 2 wheel mode".

Why such a question?? As this is my 3rd Ranger (1995 and a 2005) this should be a no brainier... I get it. BUT the salesmen said during my test drive of the 2019 edition, that this all new Ranger was just the opposite!! Front wheel drive when in 2 wheel mode and then when you goo to 4 wheel it turns the rear wheels on.

At the time it sounded odd but I was going to buy it anyway so I did not pin him down. But it would be nice to know for sure.. and who better to ask than the members of Ranger5G.

What say you??

I have an FX4 4x4 Lariat and can confirm 100% that in 2WD the REAR tires are the drive wheels.

THANK you all!! I was quite sure that was the case, but have not found a place or time to try and spin the wheel to verify myself.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I have been purchasing new cars since 1967 but I am still amazed how little many salespersons know about the products they are tempting to sell. One of the reasons I never met the salesperson until deliver of the vehicle when purchasing the last two. Got to love the internet!

Some are pretty shocking. Salespersons don't need to know everything. But they should come close to a customers knowledge level. If they don't know an answer, then they should know how to find it quickly without making customers wait alone for 30 minutes. And certainly not fill in the blanks with BS.
I absolutely agree. I knew some basic information when I went to get look at my Ranger. But had some questions that I couldn't find an answer to. The first one was if they came with a sunroof. As of yet, I have not seen one and all the information I have seen says no sunroof. The SALES MANAGER said, "Oh yea. I sold one just the other day with a sunroof." The 2nd question I had was if they came in a standard transmission. (This is the first vehicle I have owned in 20+ years that was not a standard.) The salesman looked at me and said, "You mean a stick shift?" I almost turned and walked out, but was already determined the truck I was getting. At this point I just told them to give me the paperwork, I was getting it.

I'm not defending the salesman, but I will give you a bit of information as to why he might not have known everything about your truck. When I retired, my best friend (who owned a Ford dealership before retiring himself) talked me into coming to work and selling. I would say that I took about a thousand tests over the few years that I worked there. Ford literally has about a zillion different setups for all the vehicles they make. . .and they change from year to year. It's really hard to learn and remember everything. He should've known the truck is rear wheel drive, but maybe he had just come from a Honda dealership!

My biggest beef (and this is in general) - if you don't know something, be big enough to say "I don't know, but I can find out", instead of giving some BS answer like you know. That is a huge pet peeve of mine.

But saying a Ranger is FWD is pretty bad - actually REALLY bad.

Hi Folks,

When purchasing my little 1978 Fiesta before we got to the part of the purchase would be on the A plan, the fellow remarked I was buying a vehicle with a High Combustion engine!!!??? I asked him to explain..."High Combustion engine makes more horsepower"! My question. so the location of the combustion increases the horsepower? He said yep The Higher the Better!..... I let it go.. Quite a chuckle!

Best,

I couldn't agree more. I have dealt with the same salesman for many years and multiple purchases. He is pretty knowledgeable but doesn't try to BS if he is not sure. He also knows I am kind of a tech Geek and I will have researched any vehicle in great detail before I come to see him. He is required to do a delivery check list as part of the purchase. On the ranger I had a few minutes in the truck before he got there. So it went something like this.
Him: I am supposed to help you pair your phone. Me already done. Him: and help you sign in to Ford Pass. Me, done. Him: show you all the features, here is a list. Me, got it. Me, did you know about the engineering screen and the Bezel diagnostics? Him, My work here is done. Enjoy your truck.
