I never noticed any fan noise but I also don't get into a cold truck... I always start it a few minutes before I go out.

I wonder if an engine block heater would keep the engine "warm" and thus cut down on the noise OP is concerned about... Wonder what that would do to the electric bill though.

The fan has a centrifugal clutch on it that will run until its parts are up to a certain temperature, anywhere from a few seconds to close to a minute. A block heater would't do anything to appreciably warm the fan clutch.

Semi Trucks have the same thing only the fan clutch is usually pneumatic. The clutch uses air pressure to keep the fan off (default always on). After several hours with the engine off, most of the air in the clutch may bleed out and will roar until there is a strong enough air signal.

Edit: On the other hand,, maybe not. Can get two of them for less than $12. But everywhere I check wants another $10-$12 in shipping. I refuse on principle. Put the damn things in a padded envelope and mail it. Probably $4-5 total.

By using the word "dread" I'm picturing the OP in his garage with his hand on the key in the ignition, just before twisting it, repeating to himself "It's just a noise... it's just a noise.... it's just a noise... it's just a noise.... it can't hurt you..... just start the truck......."

I'm going to chalk this one up on the side of the ledger that has...tailgate too high, truck lists to the drivers side, weld splatter on the muffler, etc...

My truck has the weather stripping. Just want to add the bumpers.

I'll end up doing it. Shipping is just a sore point to me at times... like when it doubles the cost of an item.

Look at the video I posted. Definitely has fluid. And warm/hot engine will need more air blowing thru the radiator, make the fan spin faster.

The reason for the loud fan at start up is that all the fluid settles to the bottom, thus engaging the clutch. After a few minutes, the fluid is pumped back to the center of the clutch.

LOL, that was the deletion that I really affected my perception of the Ranger being a truck. I guess my frame of reference was old pickups and the massive springs they had.

The hood prop, even though that's all I've ever had on any of my vehicles, just felt wrong to me for the Ranger. So I added the Red Line ones ... =)

Of course, after adding the engine cover, I can just knock twice on the hood and the mice will open it! =D

my, I opened this thread and all the mice in my garage got excited with how nice and warm that engine compartment looks. They will be over later.

Can confirm that the MHU (Mouse Habitat Upgrade), or engine cover, does pretty much nothing for any engine noise. It's pretty small and lays flat above the engine with an inch or two of space to focus the sound out to the sides.

Now in my '22, I was missing the side weatherstripping and would suggest adding that along with the engine cover (if this was "decontented" from your '20). I can't really say that side weatherstripping makes any diff to the sound, but I'd think that has a greater effect than the cover (lol, one decibel decrease?).

Plus the weatherstripping is a whole lot cheaper than that cover! Side note, mine was also missing the hood bumpers and I added those at the same time and they were inexpensive.

Only sure fire thing I've found is to crank up the radio! =D

I think the side seals main purpose is to help keep rain out.

On mine, that is missing said seals I'll occasionally see my relay block, battery, ect get droplets of water from heavier rains.


I used 1/4 closed cell foam seal on mine.
