Sharing the drawer and sleeping platform that I recently designed and built. The top is 3/4" ply wood supported by 2 2x10s with a 1/2" plywood base. The drawer is constructed from 1/2" ply wood. The sides are supported by the small ledge that is built into the bed walls. Made to be easily removed with the option of leaving the driver side open for tall items. Since this photo I added some low profile pull handles to the drawer. I'm still debating if I want to poly or bed liner the whole thing.

I suspect there are reasons for the open bit on the left. That said I would definitely recommend treating the wood with something at the least. Since it is a sleeping platform as well I would at the least use a carpet as well. Don't know if I would use Rhino Line.

Looks like fine workmanship Rusty. I like that you’ve built in versatility for different cargo or a bike. Nicely done. ??

That looks great! Could you share more details about your design?

Specifically:
  • Do you have vertical supports other than on the sides (or maybe the top rests on the drawer?)?
  • Re: "the small ledge" on the bed walls, my recollection is that that ledge slopes downward. But it looks like it's holding your platform securely even with the slope?
Thanks for sharing your design!

Thank you. The compartment sides are 2x10 lumber and each have a strip of 3/4" plywood running along the length to support the plywood top sections on either side. I used some turnbuckles to anchor the unit to the tie downs front and rear to keep the drawer unit from sliding around on me. The slope on the ledge does represent a little of a challenge in getting things to fit but it works if you get a nice snug fit. You can see in the my photo there is a little uphill slope on the left side. I plan to attack that edge heavily when I sand it to level that out a bit. Still have not gotten around to coating this thing. I think I've been contemplating using the Durabak coating below.
