Ummm, never hit West PAC, Iwo came to the east coast to Norfolk just before I boarded, and we were all Med cruises. Operation Nimbus Star clearing mines in the Suez where the air coming in the vents was 100. 650 psi steam at 860 degree superheated. Pleasant working conditions 18-20 hours a day. Ah yes, the good ole days.
My four years in the Navy left me without ever setting foot on a ship. I was a P-3 mechanic. Our deployments involved the entire squadron relocating for 6 months. Do not regret it at all. But military life was not my thing.

Four six month Med cruises in four years plus all the other intermediate cruises kinda did me in. I made E5 in three years, was basically in charge of the engine room but still 18 to 20 hour days in a nasty engine room gets old quick.

You are absolutely right on doing it again but am very glad I did cause it set me up for a very good career and retirement in nuclear power plant maintenance and management. (Surry Power Station)
You and I think alike on mandatory two years, minimum, something I have said for many years. Teach these brats some discipline.
I volunteered when a recruiter came to my high school in the spring of 1972, went in September that year. Then as I remember, the draft ended later that year or the middle of 73. Oh well.
I was a sucker just wanted to get out of dodge as a teenager. Aced the ASVAB and also did special testing. Listened to the recruiter and he told me to do an open contract and I could choose later for anything I was interested in. You know the needs of the military come first so I ended up in an infantry battalion. Still worked out my first interview for a job was at a print shop owned by an old retired Lt
Col and Major. Was hired on the spot and turned into a 40 year career. Small shop so the took care of the employees.

Early 70’s was a bad time to find work where I grew up in Pa so I was the same way, get outa town. It was a good move. Even when I got out in 76, jobs were no better. The wife and I both working couldn’t even make a house payment.

Gotta love that about the military lol. I was a 62F (Crane Operator) in the Army, and not once did I actually do my job  . I was assigned to an ammo company, basically driving trucks. So I was a 68F, doing an 88M job (truck driver) in a 89B company . Technically though I did more 62E work. Heavy construction equipment operator. Had a badass Platoon SGT that pushed us to operate everything and anything. He was a hardass, but was fair and ALWAYS had your back, especially when it came to officers. Good times!!

Started out on 916's (loved slapping gears in that thing) hauling dozers, forklifts, graders and whatever else, for field training prep. (not actually me)

Then we got these guys, PLS's. Those were a blast going offroad. Raise and lower tire pressure at the push of a button.

I'm sure that's you in the first picture, doing nothing. Kind like what you're doing now when you're supposed to be working. 😜

This thread has gone way off topic. Time you change the name to military memories as no info left on rear view mirrors!
Isn’t that the purpose of this site? That all threads must go off topic or they will be locked for lack of fun and useful info.
This forum has brought back lot of good memories anywhere from concerts, rock bands, old cars and stupid stuff we did as kids too name a few.
