Spent a half hour on the phone trying to order Firestone Destination X/T in a LT255/75 r17, C Load. All 4 tires plus spare. Their stock online algorithm says 'not compatible' with Ford Ranger 4x4s, but this forum is awash with confirmation that not only will a 255/75 r17 fit, but specifically the Destination X/Ts will fit.

I'm trying to explain to the person their website is incorrect, per actual user accounts (here, namely). I ask how can we get past this problem? She went back and forth to her manager, with me on hold, essentially saying Discount Tire says these don't fit. I ask, "how about we order them and if they don't fit, I don't buy them." She said they'd really rather not do that.

I then cited their website, which states any tire purchase can be returned in 30 days if the customer isn't satisfied. I said, in this instance, I wouldn't even leave your service bay, even better for you. How is this different?

They finally relented and ordered the tires for me. I tried first to order online, but you have to put your vehicle info in. The website denied me right there from going any further. Makes me wonder how so many people purchased 255/75 r17s, seemingly without issue? What did I do wrong?

Not sure about that size but just did 265/70s with them and had zero issues with that process.

My suggestion? Go to Firestone Auto care and order the tires there. Never had an issue with them

I walked into my local store and told them I wanted 255/80 r17 Toyos. They ordered them, I paid for them, they called when they came, they installed them.

What did you do wrong?

Dealing with some automaton on the national customer service line? Next time call your store directly.

Some yrs back called nearby discount tire and got a price for Michelin mx4, week later went to store to buy and they quoted a higher price, wouldn't back down. I contacted their hq in AZ and they gave me a price $ 50 less than original quote which was a very good price. 6 months later went back for 4 more tires (had 2 Saab 9-5) and got same great price, well below competitors. Anyways suggest you call hq and see if they can make you whole. Imo they are a great company, well managed.

So, whats the problem?
That the store manager and staff dithered for a half hour with me on the phone, trying to decide how and if they’ll order 255/75/17s for me. Poor customer service.

I couldn't tell from your OP if it was the local store or national number. That's why I put the "?" in there.

Sounds like a crummy store. Unfortunately customer service has gone even more downhill the last few years.

ive been to discount tire a lot. always a good experience 99.9 % of the time. i will be a discount tire customer always. one particular location i use has one manager that just seems to have sand in his vagina on a regular basis and is not friendly with customers. so last time i was there i simply told him to go away and did my tire biz with the other employee next to him lol. was it rude of me. yes. do i go around being rude to folks often, no - almost never. on two occasions he was pissy i wanted my tires re balanced. i made an appointment for it etc. he was dead sure it was that i had them put on "the wrong tires" against his recommendation. I understood his point but he never listened to mine just cut me off and walked away. my tires, my truck my damn money! so far i got 22k on them with zero regret and the tires are basically the industry standard for the type. bear in mind this lil hissy of his was after i told him to his face that id been off road for hundreds of rough miles since the last balance and rotation and knew that i had thrown off some of the wheel weights and that is why i wanted the balancing. you could clearly see where the weights came off and could feel it in the steering wheel lol. of course he didnt look. he knew too much to stoop to that level. i got 7 tires from them for my 5g alone so far. he should be happy to see me lol. funny thing - on both of those occasions at least two tires were out of balance and needed weights added back and the guy in the bay doing the work said they were in need of balancing lol. im not even about to deal with someones grumpy disposition when im not required to and have not done anything wrong. esp. when every other employee is top notch at that location. so if you get the guy that does not want to get your biz just tell them to put someone else on that does not have a attitude flaw.

How do you bypass this conundrum?
You lie of course.

Find out what truck comes with the size you want.
Order them, and install yourself.

All they want to do is avoid the liability

Discount Tire is a forum sponsor here. Reach out to them on the appropriate sponsor thread. The one guy from Discount that seems active on this forum appears helpful.

Unfortunately the ONE guy does not respond quickly. I sent them a message and I got a response a month later. I suspect the guy does a lot more than just this Forum.
